Built upon a psychological model of cross-cultural adjustment and the examination of the specific problems and needs of the German and Chinese exchange students, the study provides a target group-oriented intercultural training program dealing with knowledge and learning, motivation, and behavioral features to improve the cross-cultural communication and the effective coping with adjustment difficulties of the exchange students.

It is addressed and written for all those people who are interested in the German-American cultural differences as well as for all of those who are curious and interested in how Germans appear and are seen by their foreign visitors. You will be given a variety of typical daily situations which are often critical turning points for the acceptance and understanding between visitors and members of the host country. The chosen situations are known as "stumbling blocks", which often create confusion, misunderstandings and conflicts for many foreigners. For each episode there are four possible explanations for the native's behavior. Only one explanation is correct from the foreign point of view. The other alternatives are misinterpretations which arise from ignorance about the factors that influence a culture, or they arise from prejudices and wrong ideas about the foreign culture. The trainee has to choose the alternative he considers to be the best, in order to explain the situation from the host culture's point of view. Each explanation contains information as to why it is appropriate or not. At the end of every unit the underlying "Culture Standard" will be explained as well as the historical development of these standards. This step by step process will sharpen the interpretation skills of the trainee to the point that he will be able to see and do things the way a German would. The training helps you to avoid intercultural missunderstandings from the start and thus makes it easyer for you to cope with the foreign culture.

The increasing international interconnection of the world’s economics has the consequence that more and more German employees have to stay abroad for a longer time.The south-east Asian and especially the Chinese economic environment are gaining a bigger and bigger role – also for the German textile market due to a strong economic growth, the low wage level. Especially in the manufacturing branch this is an important decision factor - at approximately € 0, 32 per hour and the size of a potential market. The low wage level will not rise in the near future but the fact that China’s economic importance is growing requires a new kind of approach to enter the market in any kind of way. Since Germany is a country with only few raw materials the requirements of manpower have changed. During the last years the persons in the responsible departments became aware that China does require special skills regarding management, communication and intercultural interactions. A relatively new area of research has become more and more important for the human resource departments in German companies: the intercultural preparation of employees and expatriates who are the ones that fill the key positions for the exchange of information between the parent company and the office abroad. For a successful expatriation a profound preparation regarding intercultural communication and behaviour is needed. The better the preparation the better will be the expatriation for the company and the expatriate. A failed dispatch abroad can cost the company approximately € 125.000, - per employment. Furthermore the consequences for the expatriate can also be disastrous: social and professional decline and e.g. depression.This work has the aim to answer the following questions: How does well designed training programs look like?
