Book Description
As simulated learning experiences are increasingly used in healthcare education to enhance student engagement and experience, Clinical Simulation for Healthcare Professionals serves as a resource for the utility, design, and implementation of simulation-based education in occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech-language pathology, and nursing. Using best practice methods, academic and clinical rehabilitation professionals of all levels will learn how to design and implement clinical simulations. These can be used as a tool for education, assessment, research, and skills integration. Written by Drs. Audrey Zapletal, Joanne Baird, Jean Prast, Maureen Hoppe, Tracy Van Oss, and Adel Herge, Clinical Simulation for Healthcare Professionals provides comprehensive information about commonly used simulation methods including high and low technology simulations, simulated patients, task trainers, and role play. Also included are step-by-step instructions for how to build simulation experiences in a variety of settings and for various learning and teaching needs. How-to information assists instructors who want to develop and integrate simulation-based education into a new or existing curriculum. The example simulations inside represent an array of different practice and focus uses. Each stage of the simulation is addressed from creation to learning assessment to debriefing. Simulation integrates the worlds of education, health professions, and the performing arts within a singular enriching experience. Clinical Simulation for Healthcare Professionals fulfills a need for educators looking to develop the skills needed to create complex and dynamic learning environments.

Book Description
An Official Publication of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, Defining Excellence in Simulation Programs aims to meet the needs of healthcare practitioners using simulation techniques for education, assessment, and research. Increasingly, simulation is an integral part of teaching and training programs in healthcare settings around the world. Simulation models, including virtual simulation, scenario-based simulation with actors, and computerized mannequins, contributes to improved performance and reduced errors in patient care. This text establishes working definitions and benchmarks for the field of simulation and defines the types of simulation programs, while also covering program leadership, funding, staffing, equipment and education models. It provides knowledge critical to the success of simulation program management, simulation educators, and simulation researchers. Written to appeal to the novice to advanced beginner, a special section in each chapter is directed to the competent to expert programs, managers, educators, and researchers, so that this text truly can serve as the comprehensive reference for anyone in simulation.

Book Description
"The purpose of this evidence-based project was to integrate simulation into a Bachelor of Science Nursing program to enhance the medical surgical patient safety knowledge and skill set of nursing students. High fidelity computer-operated manikins simulated a variety of commonly occurring acute care medical-surgical patient conditions in the schools skill lab each week during the fall semester. Twenty-nine junior level medical-surgical nursing students participated 2 hours each week in 8 carefully designed clinical scenarios in which a manikin, with "human" vital signs and responses acted as a "patient." Scenarios were embedded with standard patient safety concepts that correlated to the topics studied in the student's co-requisite medical-surgical theory course. Project evaluation was done using a pretest posttest comparative analysis, peer review debriefing, and a student simulation effectiveness survey." -- Abstract.

Book Description
Here is the first book to respond to the growing movement towards clinical simulations in health care education. It provides all of the guidance needed to make an informed decision about whether to begin using patient simulators . describes how to develop and operate a simulation center . and discusses how to design educational and assessment simulations that reflect specific educational curricula. Features the expertise of three authorities who have extensive experience in working with the University of Louisville School of Medicine's Dr. John M. and Dorothy Paris Simulation Center-one of the leading medical simulation centers in the world. Explains the value of simulation for a variety of healthcare disciplines and discusses which types of simulations are most relevant for each field. Discusses the resources (space, personnel, equipment) needed to establish a simulation program. Evaluates the specific simulation products that are currently available. Details the "nuts and bolts" of preparing relevant "patients" and scenarios. Describes applications for assessment, certification, and re-certification. Presents an overview of future trends in simulation (such as virtual reality simulations) and discusses issues related to planning for simulation center growth.
