In this project, we design two new Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) systems based on driver comfort, safety, vehicle following performance, environmental and traffic flow characteristics considerations. A new variable time headway rule is proposed and used to meet these considerations. Analysis and simulations are used to evaluate and compare the two designs. The first ACC system (referred to as ACC01) incorporates two controllers: one for speed tracking and one for vehicle following. The second ACC system (referred to as ACC02) treats the vehicle following task as a special speed tracking task and incorporates more intelligence in dealing with disturbance rejection, smooth response and safe vehicle following without affecting travel time. It provides better transient performance than ACC01, and can attenuate oscillations in the speed response of the preceding vehicle. It has also been shown that ACC02 provides better fuel economy and emission results than ACC01. The ACC02 design will be used for subsequent studies in a continuation project.

One of the driver assistant systems currently under development by most automotive manufacturers is the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) system. The major drawback of commercially available ACC systems is the limited performance in cornering situations, where the road presents current/future curvatures. In particular, the interaction between longitudinal and lateral controller systems has not been deeply studied. This work proposes a multi-layer control structure to create synergies and safe interaction between longitudinal and lateral controllers in order to obtain both lateral stability and safe clearance of advanced autonomous driving vehicle. It mainly focuses on the design of an Integrated Vehicle Dynamics Control strategy for Adaptive Cruise Control with auto-steering application intended to decrease driver's workload. The results of simulations conducted in Matlab/Simulink have shown that the proposed integrated controller satisfies the performance in terms of autonomous driving, path tracking and collision avoidance for various traffic situations.

The purpose of this document is to describe the research, including simulations and a field experiment, involving the operation of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) on managed lanes. The scenarios associated with this concept were chosen and designed to facilitate rapid and successful deployment of a solution that is not yet in use. The proposed operation involves deploying platoons of CAV-equipped vehicles that are governed by an integrated set of speed-harmonization, cooperative-merge, and cooperative-adaptive-cruise-control (CACC) applications. The concept accounts for CACC-vehicle behaviors in the vicinity (both upstream and downstream) of managed-lane entry ramps. The concept further addresses platooning and cooperative merging on the managed lane. The concept was simulated, and potential improvements were quantified. The results were then implemented in a small number of real vehicles and tested on a real roadway under controlled conditions and in mixed traffic.
