The Air Force Human Resources Laboratory/Combat Logistics Branch (AFHRL/LRC) is engaged in the research and development (R & D) of an Integrated Maintenance Information System (IMIS). This system will be capable of accessing and integrating information from numerous Air Force data bases to provide technical support to the maintenance aid which will provide instructions for accomplishing maintenance tasks. A diagnostic module will be contained in the portable computer software to help the technician in performing complex diagnostic tasks. This paper describes the algorithms and decision logic employed in the IMIS module. The paper also describes the implementation of the diagnostic module in the portable computer used in a successful demonstration of integrated maintenance activities on the F-16 fire control radar system. This technical report describes Research and Development efforts to redesign and enhance the Integrated Maintenance Information System Diagnostic Module (MIS-DM). The diagnostic module, redesigned in Smalltalk/V and utilizing information from the Content Data Model (CDM), provides technical support to the maintenance technician by furnishing a wide range of capabilities to assist in the selection of an efficient sequence of maintenance tasks. Object-Oriented (OO) rapid prototyping techniques were used to create a diagnostic module compatible with hierarchical data base concepts employed by the CDM. The enhanced IMIS diagnostic module now provides three modes of assessment (functional, physical, and degraded) whereas the previous version provided only the functional mode. Other IMIS diagnostic module enhancements further expanded diagnostic capabilities with the implementation of algorithms to provide an access group option, 'But Not' data entry, presentation of test results, and a revised critically function.

This technical paper documents a study to validate and verify the Integrated Maintenance Information System (IMIS) diagnostic module. This effort, while focusing on the diagnostic module, evaluated limited aspects of the technical order authoring and presentation module. Although testing was done on the IMIS diagnostic system, the scenarios investigated are applicable to most diagnostic systems, and the results and recommendations may also have wider applicability. This effort consisted of three segments: scenario development, test and analysis, and recommendations. The scenarios described conditions where pitfalls may exist in the current diagnostic system. Test and analysis focused on the procedures and results of demanding scenarios within the IMIS diagnostic module. Recommendations are provided base on adverse testing results. (RRH).

This report describes a proof-of-concept effort to demonstrate the Integrated Maintenance Information System Diagnostic Module (IMIS-DM). The IMIS- DM uses a small portable computer and special purpose software to generate and provide diagnostic advice to the technician for use in troubleshooting Air Force weapon systems. The F-16 Fire Control Radar was used as the testbed for the demonstration. The project demonstrated that a small, portable computer can interface directly with the MIL-STD-1553 multiplex control bus of the F-16, act as bus controller, initiate built-in tests, read and analyze the resulting fault data, provide diagnostic advice to maintenance technicians, and present automated technical procedures to guide the technician in performing tests and corrective maintenance. The IMIS-DM was tested by having technician use the system to perform troubleshooting tasks on the radar system. The technicians were able to successfully solve all troubleshooting problems used in the demonstration. The demonstration results indicate that the IMIS-DM will provide an effective diagnostic capability for the IMIS and will provide the basis for significant improvements in the ability of Air Force maintenance personnel to perform diagnostic tasks.
