Book Description
Focusing on the process of agricultural policy-making within the Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM), this book provides a context for understanding the evolving theory of regional integration among developing countries. Dr. Axline traces the progress of Caribbean integration from its beginnings in the mid-1960s to its present state of stagnation. Drawing on original documents and extensive interviews in the twelve CARICOM member countries, he describes the move away from a market-oriented laissez-faire approach to agriculture and the shift toward sectoral programming. The role of other regional organizations, such as the Caribbean Development Bank and the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute, is examined and related to national and regional policies in the agricultural sector. The Caribbean experience, concludes Dr. Axline, suggests that the future direction of regional cooperation among developing countries will likely be toward more intensive integration on a less extensive scale.

Book Description
Disaster Risk Governance offers the first extensive engagement with disaster risk governance in the Caribbean and Sub-Saharan Africa. In the last decade and a half Kenya, Jamaica, Dominica, and Zanzibar have all suffered massive destruction from disasters caused by natural hazards. Despite the tremendous investments in disaster risk reduction (DRR), disasters have wiped out the developmental gains of these countries. In this book, Denise Thompson argues that disaster risk governance (DRG) as a practical and academic matter has not been given the attention it deserves, and as a result, this neglect has undermined the time, money and resources invested in DRR in developing countries since the late 1970s and early 1980s. Thompson proposes that properly conceptualizing DRG based on context will help to address some of the deficiencies. Consequently, DRG needs to become a central focus, particularly for developing countries. Written with real-life implications for developing countries, Disaster Risk Governance is perfectly suited for practitioners and researchers in area studies, disaster risk reduction and disaster governance, as well as students of disaster studies.

Book Description
This book focuses on equality, inclusion, and discrimination within the English-speaking Caribbean region, specifically as it relates to employment, education, society, and the law. Though anti-discrimination laws have recently been enacted in the Caribbean, this, in and of itself, neither translates to societal changes nor changes within the organisational context. The authors examine racial diversity in public sector organisations in Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana, gender diversity in organisations across the Caribbean region, sexual orientation and its impact on employment, disability and access within organisations, and equality and inclusion within Caribbean institutions of higher education. Further, the book explores the region’s equality laws and compares them with legislation from selected developed countries. This interdisciplinary text provides researchers in HRM, organisational behavior, sociology, and public policy with an overview of the types of discrimination prevalent within the Caribbean as well as the varied institutional frameworks in place that encourage equality.

Book Description
The Caribbean countries, and many other Third World countries in Latin America, Asia and Africa, have been under the yoke of structural adjustment measures for more than a decade. Numerous studies have addressed the inequality of North-South relations, the lack of transparency in negotiations that have led to the signature of agreements, the absence of a clear definition of responsibilities of the parties engaged, the inadequacy and inadaptation of policies with regard to the socio-cultural context, and especially the refusal to take into account the social demands of the most deprived. The criticisms formulated in this book can only find a beginning of solutions by the setting up of a solid administrative organization in which the public officials are made accountable and who, once aware of the national and international stakes, can confront the constraints involved in State/international negotiation relations. The book is a very rich presentation of the concept and the problems of structural adjustment and institutional development in the developing countries. Beside the impressive introduction and the convincing conclusion, the articles on these prerequisites for institutional sustainability present the most important empirical research results. The contents is a clear description of problems, failures and results in institutional reforms.
