A fitting emendation may be formulated in the words, condensation is the grand secret of conveying instruction. Diffusiveness too often defeats its own object. Prolixity may be justifiable in the case of those annalists who have at their command unlimited time and space in which to review and particularize unimportant facts - a condition which does not apply to the compiler of such a work as this, necessarily confined to generalization the crowding of great events into a line and the history of centuries into a paragraph.
