This book represents a compendium of the twenty most useful far-infrared (or submillimeter) lasers. In the case of each laser described here, we have been fortunate to have the author who is the pioneer and acknowledged authority describe the principles of operation and to prepare the list of emission lines. Until these lasers were developed during the past decade, the submillimeter range of the spectrum has been almost barren due to lack of sources of radiation. The lasers described here remain the only practical, powerful source of radiation between the wavelengths of one millimeter and ten micrometers. Many hundreds of emission lines have been listed here, some providing hundreds of kilowatts of peak power in pulsed operation, others providing many tens of milliwatts of continuous power. The hundreds of wavelengths of the emission lines are so closely spaced in the wavelength range between one millimeter and one-tenth millimeter that this source of radiation can be considered to be step-tunable. Of course, labora tory scientists still depend upon the black body source (mercury vapor lamp) and the Fourier transform spectrometer to provide con tinuous spectra, but for this we must deal with true energy starva tion at the sub-microwatt level. This critical review can be expected to serve as a handbook for decades in the future because it contains descriptions of fundamen tal principles and listings of fundamental physical data.

This report summarizes studies on optically pumped far infrared molecular gas lasers. The research has been concerned with the general subjects of far infrared integrated optics and technology, the discovery of new optically pumped molecular laser systems, and the study and analysis of nonlinear processes (Raman and hyper-Raman) that can occur in optically pumped systems. The theoretical density matrix analysis of the gain spectra of nonlinear systems and the first detailed experimental measurements of these systems are presented. It is demonstrated that third and fifth order nonlinear processes can exceed first order laser processes. An experimental study of the generation of a 22.653 GHz signal (the largest wavelength yet reported) in optically pumped NH3 is described. The frequency tunability and single shot spectral characteristics of the signal were measured with precision. A single laser pump in a four-level system can yield two laser signals, which in the linear case are not coupled together. However, with stronger pumping, nonlinear effects can couple the two laser signals with the result that the behavior of one laser signal is determined by the other and vice versa. The self-consistent analysis of this problem is described.

The advantages of molecular gases in lasers with noncoherent optical pumping are well known and conditioned on the one hand by a relatively broad spectral pumping-light absorption band, and on the other by a relatively narrow working-transition line width. One such laser - the photodissociation laser - has been in existence for a long time already. The present paper proposes an infrared molecular laser with optical pumping to the vibrational-rotational band of the molecule in the electron ground state, and noncoherent emission from an 'immovable' shock wave arising during steady escape of the working mixture from the nozzle under conditions of incomplete expansion of the gas into the atmosphere. The composition of this gas can either correspond or not with that of the working mixture. Everywhere below, for simplicity, by working mixture the authors mean the mixture CO2 + N2 + He. In this, helium plays the same role as in CO2 lasers with electrical discharge. The nitrogen mixture is not necessary to achieve inversion, but it proves favorable, laser level and, secondly, to expansion of the vibrational-rotational pumping absorption band.
