Cette étude espérimentale porte sur le comportement physico-chimique et mécanique des portiers de ciment Portland partiellement substitués par une chaux magnésienne de type "S" et comparativement à d'autres types de chaux. Les critères retenus pour l'étude des matériaux sont ceux de la classification MERUC des enduits et mortiers qui retient comme caractéristiques principales la masse volumique apparente, le module d'élasticité, la résistance à la traction, la rétention d'eau et la capillarité. Dans une première étape, les différentes chaux ont été caractérisées par leur surface spécifique, leur répartition porométrique et leur morphologie. Le comportement de mortier comprenant différents pourcentages de chaux, à teneur en eau constante ou à maniabilité constante a ensuite été analysé à l'état frais et à l'état durci. Enfin, une étude microstructurelle de l'état durci a permis de mettre en évidence les espèces formées dans les différents cas et d'apprécier leur relation avec les propriétés macroscopiques. Dans les différentes étapes, le comportement spécifique de la chaux de type "S" a été analysé et a permis de mettre en évidence le rôle de la composition chimique et de la surface spécifique d'une chaux.

Using plant material as raw materials for construction is a relatively recent and original topic of research. This book presents an overview of the current knowledge on the material properties and environmental impact of construction materials made from plant particles, which are renewable, recyclable and easily available. Laurent Arnaud is a Bridges, Waters and Forestry Engineer (Ingénieur des Ponts, Eaux et Forêts) and researcher at Joseph Fourier University in Grenoble, France. He is also Professor at ENTPE (Ecole Nationale des Travaux Publics de l’Etat).
