The Political Economy and Media Coverage of the European Economic Crisis
Author: Julien Mercille
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317952111
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 235
Book Description
The European economic crisis has been ongoing since 2008 and while austerity has spread over the continent, it has failed to revive economies. The media have played an important ideological role in presenting the policies of economic and political elites in a favourable light, even if the latter’s aim has been to shift the burden of adjustment onto citizens. This book explains how and why, using a critical political economic perspective and focusing on the case of Ireland. Throughout, Ireland is compared with contemporary and historical examples to contextualise the arguments made. The book covers the housing bubble that led to the crash, the rescue of financial institutions by the state, the role of the European institutions and the International Monetary Fund, austerity, and the possibility of leaving the eurozone for Europe’s peripheral countries. Through a systematic analysis of Ireland’s main newspapers, it is argued that the media reflect elite views and interests and downplay alternative policies that could lead to more progressive responses to the crisis.

Curriculum Change within Policy and Practice
Author: Damian Murchan
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030507076
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 280
Book Description
This book explores how curriculum reform is interconnected with policy, practice and society. Curriculum reform is increasingly associated with efforts to better the lives of citizens and provide a competitive edge to national prosperity. Educational policy and practice have been the subject of unprecedented convergence worldwide in the quest for so-called 21st century skills. This book offers a case study of curriculum reform within the Republic of Ireland, focusing on antecedents, processes and outcomes of government efforts to evoke fundamental curriculum realignment at lower secondary level. Set against a backdrop of fluctuating economic fortunes and concerns about academic standards and educational equity, this volume has wider relevance beyond Ireland for any system undertaking education reform at scale.

The Invisible Republic
Author: Robbie Smyth
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 303086734X
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 215
Book Description
The book establishes a philosophical base for the economic principles of Irish republicanism in the 21st century. It traces these from their late 18th century origins to the present day. It is unique in terms of contemporary books about Irish republicanism. There has been a dearth of economic analysis of the republican position since the creation of the modern Irish state in 1922. The book makes a link between the politics of Tone, Davis, Lalor, Connolly and Pearse through the economic experience of people living and working in not just Ireland but around the world today. The examples are contemporary but the ideological basis stretches from the present day back through the last 250 years of developing Irish republican thought. It identifies a series of key contemporary economic issues and gives a socialist republican perspective on possible solutions and strategies. Ultimately it provides a recalibration of the principles of socialism and republicanism in the 21st century.

Irish Media
Author: John Horgan
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134606168
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines

Pages : 228
Book Description
Irish Media: A Critical History maps the landscape of media in Ireland from the foundation of the modern state in 1922 to the present. Covering all principal media forms, print and electronic, in the Republic and in Northern Ireland, John Horgan shows how Irish history and politics have shaped the media of Ireland and, in turn, have been shaped by them. Beginning in a country ravaged by civil war, it traces the complexities of wartime censorship and details the history of media technology, from the development of radio to the inauguration of television in the 1950s and 1960s. It covers the birth, development and - sometimes - the death of major Irish media during this period, examining the reasons for failure and success, and government attempts to regulate and respond to change. Finally, it addresses questions of media globalisation, ownership and control, and looks at issues of key significance for the future. Horgan demonstrates why, in a country whose political divisions and economic development have given it a place on the world stage out of all proportion to its size, the media have been and remain key players in Irish history.
