Excerpt from India's Nation Builders It has been a great pleasure to undertake the present task, in compliance with the request to write short but reasonably complete narratives of Indians that have served as pathfinders in the difficult work of nation-building in India. But delightful in itself though the writing of the book has been, it has not been quite so easy as one might have expected, by reason of the paucity of reliable material, or difficulties in having access to such material as is actually obtainable. There is an abundance of books that may be used as running commentaries on the various movements in India, social as well as political, but there is unfortunately, a regrettable dearth of authentic biographies from which one might glean salient facts, dates or leading episodes in the careers of great men. It is with a view of filling such gaps that the present modest attempt is made. But our object has not been so much to chronicle bare incidents as to strive to reveal the personality of the man whose contribution to one or the other of the liberalising movements in India comes under review. Excerpt from Indian National Evolution: A Brief Survey of the Origin and Progress of the Indian National Congress, and the Growth of Indian Nationalism Sometime in August 1913 at the instance of some friends I undertook to write a few articles for a magazine on the Rise and Growth of the Indian National Congress, the most important and phenomenal movement in the political history of new India. After only a few pages were written, it was discovered that such a subject could not be properly dealt with in the spare columns of any magazine in the country without taxing its capacity to an unreasonable extent and that for a much longer period than was perhaps consistent with the sustained interests of such a review. The idea was, therefore, abandoned. In January following while turning over some of the materials which I had collected and arranged for the articles, it occurred to me that these might be published in the form of a pamphlet so that they may be of some use to any one who may be disposed to write a well-digested history of this evolutionary movement. That is the origin of the little volume which is now presented to the public. The book was fairly completed by July 1914 when it was partly handed over to Mr. G. A. But the prophecy had been overheard by the King's older son, Suryanemi, the heir to the throne. Suryanemi thought of his unborn brother as a rival and ordered the minister to have the child killed as soon as it was born. Though it speaks of the Indian kingdom of Varanasi, this story from India was preserved in the monasteries of the high, frozen plateau of Tibet. It was found and translated by Europeans in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
