This important new study investigates the competing demand for water in the Bhavani and Noyyal River basins of south India from the early 19th century to the early 21st century from a historical perspective. This monograph presents a comprehensive account of environmental history of India and its tribals from the late eighteenth onwards, covering both the colonial and post-colonial periods. The book elaborately discusses the colonial plunder of forest resources up to the introduction of the Forest Act (1878) and focuses on how colonial policy impacted on the Indian environment, opening the floodgates of forest resources plunder, primarily for timber and to establish coffee and tea plantations. The book argues that even after the advent of conservation initiatives, commercial exploitation of forests continued unabated while stringent restrictions were imposed on the tribals, curtailing their access to the jungles. It details how post-colonial governments and populist votebank politics followed the same commercial forest policy till the 1980s without any major reform, exploiting forest resources and also encroaching upon forest lands, pushing the self-sustainable tribal economy to crumble. The book offers a comprehensive account of India’s environmental history during both colonial and post-colonial times, contributing to the current environmental policy debates in Asia.

This article has developed from a desire to develop a theoretical position for “Nature” in the context of modernity. It argues that the near-total absence of theories of nature in modern Western social thought stands in stark contrast to the remarkable extent to which nature has assisted and indexed the rise of modernity itself. This historical-theoretical imbalance has had grave social consequences, and it calls for an urgent reintegration of nature in theoretical discourses. The recently emerging genre of “environmental history” has carved a small but significant niche for itself in this direction. Some exciting literature has been produced that addresses itself to the task at hand. It is interesting to note that even though, as a discipline, environmental history registers its rise in the West, particularly the United States in the early 1970s, most of the radical environmental histories that are being written today emanate from the “peripheral” zones of the global political economy. While the peripheries have been severely exploited for their raw materials and natural products in the international division of labor since the beginnings of the modern world-system, it is also strangely not coincident that in the cultural division of labor, so to speak, these peripheries have been seen as part of the wild, natural world, whereas the core, Western regions have portrayed themselves as bearers of civilization and cultural advancement. Thus, it is appropriate that some of the radical environmental histories have committed themselves to analyzing the environmental impact of colonialism on peripheral societies. I would like to propose the term environmental colonialism as a metaphor and point of departure through which I will locate and critique practices and structures of colonial-capitalist-modernity over the last five hundred years, along with the different strategies, discourses, and narratives employed to enact environmental colonialism in different parts of the earth.

This multidisciplinary volume offers unique perspectives, across the globe and throughout the centuries, on the complexity of the nexus between work and the life course. For industrialized regions, from Germany and Western Europe to China and Japan, it questions the widespread notion of an overall growing working life course instability, since the 1970s. For unindustrialized or industrializing regions, from West Africa to state socialist East Central Europe, as well as for transnational and transcontinental labour migrations, it shows the enormous influence of the extended family and wider kin on individual pathways into and out of work. For early modern Europe, India, and China, and up to twentieth-century state socialism and to current welfare states, it stresses and concretizes the crucial impact of age and gender for both societal labour relations and individual work-related decision making. With all chapters based on original research, the volume reflects a close cooperation between historians, anthropologists, and sociologists. Its multidisciplinary approach finds expression in its methodological plurality, reaching from archival research and sophisticated statistical analyses to biographical interviews and participant observation. This mix allows to grasp the interaction between societal change and individual agency.
