Based on archival documents and oral histories, these essays explore the primary assumptions and objectives of President John F. Kennedy and his advisors. They examine the influence of the Cold War, global crises, domestic politics, personality and style, and historical lessons in shaping Kennedy's diplomacy, and explain his legacy. The authors address such questions as: What problems and policies did Kennedy inherit from the Eisenhower Administration? What tools or instruments of power did he have at his command in order to pursue his policies? How did he and his advisers go about making and implementing their decisions? How well did they meet their goals and what were the costs? They also explore issues such as the Atlantic alliance, nuclear arms, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the covert war against Fidel Castro, and the Vietnam war. ISBN 0-19-504584-X (pbk.): $13.95.

Book Description
Declassified documents arguably offer a premier vantage for understanding global governance, current security concerns, and the international market. While the first volume dealt with India--US bilateral relations during the 'Formative Years', this two-part volume focuses on the 'Later Years': the Lyndon B Johnson--Richard M Nixon years (1965-1972), a time when cold war politics had set in, and cold war alliances were evolving in both blocs. These selected documents are collected from the Presidential Libraries (Roosevelt-Carter), White House Papers, National Security Council, Office of Strategic Services, Central Intelligence Agency, and Foreign Relations archives. The two books examine the following topics chronologically: American Interests Abroad; US Foreign Economic Assistance in the Developing World: Market, Military, Geopolitics and Food; India's foreign policy; bilateral relations with the Soviet Union; bilateral relations with China and the 1962 war; bilateral relations with Pakistan and the 1965 war; US military aid; and India's Nuclear Program. This volume comprises seven chapters chart the course of Washington's increasing involvement in South Asia.

Book Description
In the initial phase of the Obama administration, India’s ruling class and strategic community formed a perception that the spirit of strategic partnership between the two countries might be diluted on account of China looming large in the priorities of this administration. Despite occasional hiccups in their relationship, this perception was overshadowed by the administration’s recognition of India’s role as counterweight to China in the Asia-Pacific region. This book addresses and re-evaluates the perceptions, policies and perspectives of public policy makers and bureaucratic elites in both India and the US in setting and articulating the tone, tenor and substance of the multi-faceted ties between the two countries. The scope of the book is not exclusively limited to the bilateral relationship in the critical areas such as the Indo-US nuclear deal, defence, security and strategic partnership. Its concerns and ramifications are much wider in global and regional contexts, covering/involving security architecture in the Asia-Pacific region, the interface between terrorism and weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), China as a factor in India-US relations, and the fallout of the New Delhi-Washington partnership on South Asia.
