Book Description
Excerpt from In the Days of William the Conqueror The story of William the Conqueror is the story of the man who for more than a quarter of a century was the most prominent personage of western Europe. Into whose hands shall England fall, was one of the two or three great questions of the time, and it was William who solved the problem. Whether or not his claim to the English throne was just, the people and their new sovereign seemed made for each other. The English could follow; William could lead. The English could endure; William could strike the blow that made endurance needless. The English were inclined to be grave and serious; William enjoyed a jest. The English were a little slow in their thinking; William was quick-witted. The English would yield to fate; William was fate itself. Book Description
Excerpt from William the Conqueror Line, even among the conquering kings and their imme diate instruments, their work never takes the shape of the rooting up Of the earlier institutions of the land. Those institutions are modified, sometimes silently by the mere growth Of events, sometimes formally and Of set purpose. Old institutions get new names; new institutions are set up alongside of them. But the Old ones are never swept away; they sometimes die out; they are never abolished. This comes largely of the absorbing and assimilating power Of the island world. But it comes no less of personal character and personal circumstances, and pro-eminently of the personal character of the Nor man Conqueror and of the circumstances in which he found himself. Book Description
Excerpt from William the Conqueror: A Historical Romance This Romance was written about 1 837 when Sir C. Napier was suffering under the injustice of Sir Frederick Adam. The preface is a humorous allusion to himself, as Mr. Peter Grievous, vainly seeking redress for to laugh at, and joke upon his own misfortunes, was with him an absolute necessity. The blow given to his commander was indeed metaphorical, but never forgotten or forgiven a book exposing the red-tapism and injustice of official power was inexpiable. Book Description
Excerpt from The Life William the Conqueror: Now First Published From Official Records and Other Authentic Documents While History is occupied with the public deeds of the great and the mighty of the earth, and with the consequences which result from them, it is the province of Biography to penetrate into the inmost recesses of their souls; to explore the peculiarities of individual disposition, character, and way of thinking; to study the influence of external circumstances upon these; to search out the real motives of actions; to follow its subject into the privacy of dopaestic and social life; and to draw a faithful picture alike of his virtues and his vices, his excellences and his failings, his passions, propensities, and eccentricities - in short, of every trait by which he is distinguished from the rest of mankind. The observant reader need scarcely be reminded how often trivial circumstances and expressions afford a clearer insight into the real motives, views, characters, and dispositions of men than could ever be obtained from the mere consideration of their public conduct. Book Description
William the Conqueror Makers of History by Jacob Abbott Chapter I. Normandy. A.D. 870-912 The Norman Conquest.Claim of William to the throne. The right of the strongest. One of those great events in English history, which occur at distant intervals, and form, respectively, a sort of bound or landmark, to which all other events, preceding or following them for centuries, are referred, is what is called the Norman Conquest. The Norman Conquest was, in fact, the accession of William, duke of Normandy, to the English throne. This accession was not altogether a matter of military force, for William claimed a right to the throne, which, if not altogether perfect, was, as he maintained, at any rate superior to that of the prince against whom he contended. The rightfulness of his claim was, however, a matter of little consequence, except so far as the moral influence of it aided him in gaining possession. The right to rule was, in those days, rather more openly and nakedly, though not much more really, than it is now, the right of the strongest. Map of Normandy. Normandy, William's native land, is a very rich and beautiful province in the north of France. The following map shows its situation: Map of England and part of France, showing the situation of Normandy. The English Channel.Nature of the French coast.Nature of the English coast. It lies, as will be seen upon the map, on the coast of France, adjoining the English Channel. The Channel is here irregular in form, but may be, perhaps, on the average, one hundred miles wide. The line of coast on the southern side of the Channel, which forms, of course, the northern border of Normandy, is a range of cliffs, which are almost perpendicular toward the sea, and which frown forbiddingly upon every ship that sails along the shore.
