Book Description
The Space shuttle's emergence as the single launch system for all U.S. Spacecraft, civilian and military, has required increased NASA participation in military space operations. Separate civilian and military space programs have been the topic of substantial debate within NASA, DOD, and the Congress in recent years. The debate has focused on the economies of a joint NASA/DOD space program and the effect that joining the civilian and military space programs will have on the missions of each agency. Advocates of increased cooperation between NASA and DOD argue that this arrangement is economical and efficient. Opponents object to mixing different agency missions and objectives. This report discusses issues related to joint NASA/DOD space activities and makes recommendations to address these issues. (Author).

Book Description
Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO provided its assessment of joint National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and Department of Defense (DOD) participation in space shuttle operations and Air Force activities concerned with developing and acquiring a dedicated DOD shuttle operations control facility. GAO found that, with the advent of the space shuttle, a trend has developed toward increasingly integrated NASA/DOD space operations. However, this relationship is complicated by the agencies' differing missions and objectives. This is particularly true with respect to DOD requirements for classified operations. A large portion of the cost burden for many military shuttle requirements is being borne by NASA, and extensive, long-term NASA support to DOD will be required for launch and landing operations, tracking and data acquisition services, and backup to DOD mission control systems. While NASA support to DOD is growing, the civilian program's future direction is not clear because the organization of future shuttle operations is undecided, and overall civilian space goals are still being defined. With the assistance of NASA, DOD is developing a shuttle operations and planning complex to be used solely for military missions. The complex would be equipped with the higher levels of security needed for such missions and would provide direct and exclusive military control of shuttle flight operations. However, GAO found that the development costs and system design options being considered for the complex could reduce the mission effectiveness of DOD.

Book Description
Looks at the operations of the International Space Station from the perspective of the Houston flight control team, under the leadership of NASA's flight directors, who authored the book. The book provides insight into the vast amount of time and energy that these teams devote to the development, planning and integration of a mission before it is executed. The passion and attention to detail of the flight control team members, who are always ready to step up when things do not go well, is a hallmark of NASA human spaceflight operations. With tremendous support from the ISS program office and engineering community, the flight control team has made the International Space Station and the programs before it a success.

Book Description
In this real life spy saga, James E. David reveals the extensive and largely hidden interactions between NASA and U.S. defense and intelligence departments. The story begins with the establishment of NASA in 1958 and follows the agency through its growth, not only in scope but also in complexity. In Spies and Shuttles, David digs through newly declassified documents to ultimately reveal how NASA became a strange bedfellow to the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). He tracks NASA’s early cooperation—supplying cover stories for covert missions, analyzing the Soviet space program, providing weather and other scientific data from its satellites, and monitoring missile tests—that eventually devolved into NASA’s reliance on DoD for political and financial support for the Shuttle. David also examines the restrictions imposed on such activities as photographing the Earth from space and the intrusive review mechanisms to ensure compliance. The ties between NASA and the intelligence community have historically remained unexplored, and David’s riveting book is the first to investigate the twists and turns of this labyrinthine relationship.

Book Description
This report presents a history of the development of the Space Transportation System (STS) to date between the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the executive agency acting for the Department of Defense, the United States Air Force. The STS consists of the NASA-developed space shuttle orbiter, the USAF-developed upper stage, the communications networks and launch base complexes of both agencies, and the satellite payloads developed by many user agencies to be placed in space. The program development is traced chronologically in terms of key joint-agency agreements, management interfaces, and compromises made as implementation of early proposals was accomplished. A proposal is made to develop a joint-agency STS operation authority responsive to national command/policy channels. (Author).
