The Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) commits governments to reducing, or where feasible, eliminating the production and environmental releases of twelve POPs. The Convention came into force on 17 May 2004. Australia ratified it on 20 May 2004 and became a party on 18 August 2004. Parties to the Convention are required to develop, and to endeavour to put into practice, a National Implementation Plan (NIP) setting out how they will implement their obligations under the Convention. Australia's NIP has been developed in consultation with the Stockholm Intergovernmental Forum and the Stockholm Reference Group. This forum is made up of representatives from the Australian Government as well as state and territory government agencies. The Stockholm Reference Group is the consultation mechanism for the non-government sector.
