Book Description
This book is based on the FEMS/SGM-sponsored laboratory course Immunochemical and Molecular Genetic Analysis of Bacterial Pathogens and their Virulence Determinants'. The volume deals, in review form, with the contribution made to virulence by individual surface structures and toxins. Later chapters detail methodology related to the cloning of virulence genes and to the purification, assay and immuno/biochemical analysis of their products. In producing this volume recognition has been made of the fact that research scientists need, as two of their basic requirements, a series of tested protocols which may be readily applied to the problem at hand, and topical reviews which succinctly summarize progress in the field. Immunochemical and Molecular Genetic Analysis of Bacterial Pathogens is a companion to the 1985 Elsevier Publication Enterobacterial Surface Antigens: Methods for Molecular Characterization' (Korhonen, T.K., Dawes, E.A., and Makela, P.H., eds.) also based on a related FEMS laboratory course."

Book Description
As more original molecular protocols and subsequent modifications are described in the literature, it has become difficult for those not directly involved in the development of these protocols to know which are most appropriate to adopt for accurate identification of bacterial pathogens. Molecular Detection of Human Bacterial Pathogens addresses this issue, with international scientists in respective bacterial pathogen research and diagnosis providing expert summaries on current diagnostic approaches for major human bacterial pathogens. Each chapter consists of a brief review on the classification, epidemiology, clinical features, and diagnosis of an important pathogenic bacterial genus, an outline of clinical sample collection and preparation procedures, a selection of representative stepwise molecular protocols, and a discussion on further research requirements relating to improved diagnosis. This book represents a reliable and convenient reference on molecular detection and identification of major human bacterial pathogens; an indispensable tool for upcoming and experienced medical, veterinary, and industrial laboratory scientists engaged in bacterial characterization; and an essential textbook for undergraduate and graduate students in microbiology.

Book Description
The meeting on "Microbial Surface Components and Toxins in Relation to Pathogenesis" was held on May 15-19, 1989, in the Mitzpe Rachel guesthouse of Kibbutz Ramat Rachel in Israel. Four major topics formed the basis for the meeting: adhesion and colonization; cell invasion and intracellular multipli cation; evasion of host defenses; toxins and systemic effects. The presentations clearly show that our understanding of the pathology, pathogenesis and bacteria-host cell inter-action has greatly advanced over the last few years. The contributions to our knowledge on the biogenesis of adhesins and their molecular organization, as well as on the mechanism of adherence to infected target tissue by pathogenic bacteria, have been particularly impressive. significant progress has been made in defining the nature of pathogenic and cytotoxic factors produced by bacteria, and much has been learned about the biochemical and antigenic modifications occurring in diverse types of host cells upon infection. The discussions of poly saccharide capsules, bacterial endotoxins and secreted toxins illustrated the challenge and the possibilities for vaccine development.
