Book Description
A widow becomes obsessed with the desire to once again hear her dead husband's heart, which has been harvested and transplanted into the body of another man ("Whither Thou Goest"). A mother descends into a cave in search of her autistic son, who suffers the gift and curse of vespertilian powers of perception ("Pipistrel"). After the death of the wife he no longer loves, a retired professor of archeology tries to suffocate himself in a bog("Lindow Man"). A scavenger finds treasure--a radioactive disk he believes to be a fallen star even as it kills him ("Luis"). The doctor who attends the death of Edgar Allen Poe completes the story fragment the great author has left him, the tale of a young nobleman who, enslaved to the compulsive, ritualistic demands of Tourette's Syndrome, is stranded in a lighthouse with a stranger who may or may not be deaf ("Poe's Lighthouse"). A woman chronicles the last days of her death from AIDS in a small French village ("Imagine A Woman"). Stories of sweetness and light these are not; but those with a taste for the truly suspenseful and horrific need go no farther than these inventive, disturbing tales by a master of the genre.

Book Description
Poetry. Moving from the Enlightenment science of natural history to the contemporary science of global warming, LIGHT LIGHT is a provocative engagement with the technologies and languages that shape discourses of knowing. It bridges the histories of botany, empire, and mind to take up the claim of "objectivity" as the dissolution of a discrete self and thus explores the mind's movement toward and with the world. The poems in LIGHT LIGHT range from the epigrammatic to the experimental, from the narrative to the lyric, consistently exploring the way language captures the undulation of a mind's working, how that rhythm becomes the embodiment of thought, and how that embodiment forms a politics engaged with the environment and its increasing alterations."LIGHT LIGHT puts the hive back in the archive, the source in the resource. Through Joosten's miraculous mode of attending, through this mind that 'grounds sound to seed, ' we are elemented--'The mind is a mood of electricity, warmth, water, and wind.' We are given a mode of attending that is precarious, is an enactment of the precariousness we are and, with consequence, institute. Each thing this attention falls upon 'is a source of thought, not its object.' So everything is light once we learn to see by it. To honor the field we should 'leave the field, ' but this book we should never leave."--Jane Gregory"A concordance that emerges as material, thought, and material thought, Julie Joosten's LIGHT LIGHT is a most beautiful and rare breed: as if H.D.'s Sea Garden mated with Erasmus Darwins The Loves of the Plants. 'I was to guard the valley, name it, speak to it by name, ' Joosten writes. Hers is a haunting lament. It is what love is. What could be more necessary at this time on this planet?"--Cara Benson

Book Description
Discover a collection of fairy tales unlike the ones you've read before . . . Once upon a time, in the middle of winter, a King sat at a window and sewed. As he sewed and gazed out onto the landscape, he pricked his finger with the needle, and three drops of blood fell onto the snow outside. People have been telling fairy tales to their children for hundreds of years. And for almost as long, people have been rewriting those fairy tales - to help their children imagine a world where they are the heroes. Karrie and Jon were reading their child these stories when they hit upon a dilemma, something previous versions of these stories were missing, and so they decided to make one vital change.. They haven't rewritten the stories in this book. They haven't reimagined endings, or reinvented characters. What they have done is switch all the genders. It might not sound like that much of a change, but you'll be dazzled by the world this swap creates - and amazed by the new characters you're about to discover.

Book Description
The Cambridge Edition of the Complete Fiction of Henry James provides, for the first time, a scholarly edition of a major writer whose work continues to be read, quoted, adapted and studied. The nine tales in this volume, published between 1884 and 1888, include 'The Aspern Papers', set in Venice and featuring a devious scholar attempting to steal the letters of an American poet from his former lover, and 'The Liar,' on the world of painters and their models. These tales exemplify James's continuing interest in the art of short fiction during a period which saw him responding to the stimulations of French naturalism and successfully reworking the international theme that had made him famous at the end of the 1870s. Extensive explanatory notes enable modern readers to understand the tales' historical, cultural and literary references.
