Author: Steven Pinker

ISBN: 1101200324
Category : Psychology

Pages : 532
Book Description
A brilliant inquiry into the origins of human nature from the author of Rationality, The Better Angels of Our Nature, and Enlightenment Now. "Sweeping, erudite, sharply argued, and fun to read..also highly persuasive." --Time Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize Updated with a new afterword One of the world's leading experts on language and the mind explores the idea of human nature and its moral, emotional, and political colorings. With characteristic wit, lucidity, and insight, Pinker argues that the dogma that the mind has no innate traits-a doctrine held by many intellectuals during the past century-denies our common humanity and our individual preferences, replaces objective analyses of social problems with feel-good slogans, and distorts our understanding of politics, violence, parenting, and the arts. Injecting calm and rationality into debates that are notorious for ax-grinding and mud-slinging, Pinker shows the importance of an honest acknowledgment of human nature based on science and common sense.

ISBN: 1350265152
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 273
Book Description
Bringing the image into dialogue with the imagination, mimesis and performativity, Christoph Wulf illuminates the historical, cultural and philosophical aspects of the relationship between images and human beings, looking both at its conceptual and physical manifestations. Wulf explores the cultural power of the image. He shows that images take root in our personal and collective imaginaries to determine how we feel, how we perceive the arts and culture, and how our bodies respond with physical actions, in games and dance to rituals and gesture. By showing how imagination occupies an essential place in our daily conduct, Wulf makes a significant contribution to how we think about the role of images in culture, the arts and society.

Today's Sounds for Yesterday's Films
Author: K.J. Donnelly
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 1137466367
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 233
Book Description
In recent years, there has been something of an explosion in the performance of live music to silent films. There is a wide range of films with live and new scores that run from the historically accurate orchestral scores to contemporary sounds by groups such as Pet Shop Boys or by experimental composers and gothic heavy metal bands. It is no exaggeration to claim that music constitutes a bridge between the old silent film and the modern audience; music is also a channel for non-scholarly audiences to gain an appreciation of silent films. Music has become a means both for musicians and audiences to understand this bygone film art anew. This book is the first of its kind in that it aims to bring together writings and interviews to delineate the culture of providing music for silent films. It not only has the character of a scholarly work but is also something of a manual in that it discusses how to make music for silent films.

Images Out of Africa
Author: Virginia Garner
Publisher: University Press of America
ISBN: 0761853804
Category : Literary Collections
Languages : en
Pages : 271
Book Description
"Missionaries played a fundamental role in introducing cinema into the developing world in the early twentieth century. These representatives of the Christian community diligently produced films about far-flung cultures to bolster fundraising for mission efforts around the globe. By the interwar period, a few husband-and-wife teams in Africa were making an array of films about vanishing cultures and the struggle to bring Christianity to indigenous populations. Images Out of Africa brings to light the remarkable expedition of one such team of filmmakers. In 1938, Virginia and Ray Garner, working for the Africa Motion Picture Project, ambitiously began making films in the Belgian Congo and French Cameroons, introducing film into villages for the first time. This book features Virginia Garner's recently rediscovered diaries, which highlight the challenges of making films in Africa in the 1930s and include rich descriptions of cross-cultural interactions and micro-negotiations with chiefs, headmen, and villagers." -- P. [4] of cover.

Pages : 68
Book Description
Wahine is an Oahu Girl having been born (1945) and raised in Kalihi-Waikiki. She raised her family on Molokai and now lives on Maui where her children, grandchildren and greatgrandchildren also reside. Her ambition was to be a roller derby competitor. When she was twelve it came to her in a vision that her life would revolve around the care of children. Her inspiration to create poetry comes from her lifes involvements with her spirituality, with people as she took on various jobs, with her family and with the mana (energies) of the islands all entwined with her personal insights. A follower of Dr. Wayne Dyer, she is in the process of creating her own Book of Possibilities. This, too, inspires her poetry. Each of Wahines poems commemorates something or someone important from her experience be it an event, a person, an intuition (a sixth sense). My guardian angel gives me courage and strength. So my journey is sealed with the spirit of Aloha Mana o l o: to have faith, trust, confi dence to believe. In Hawaii we are so blessed. Our lifestyle is simple. The dreams we have carry messages for all to understand the changes and the movements. We were brought up to know that all things have rhythm and to show respect for the universe. In her Dedication Wahine shares her love with her creator and her family. In her poetry she is sharing her life with us as well.
