Excerpt from Effects of Tick Eradication on the Cattle Industry of the South The more progressive farmers in sections where the cattle tick has been eradicated have purchased good bulls to use in grading up their herds. The result has been wonderful. High-grade cows, produc ing deep, broad, blocky calves that mature into '800 to 900 pound steers at 2 years old have now replaced the small, cheap scrubs that were formerly on the farm. Scrub calves that were formerly worth from $4 to $7 at 12 months of age are supplanted by the grade beef calves that weigh 450 to 600 pounds at a year old and sell 'for $15 to $30 a head. Such grade calves have been marketed for the last three years by the Bureau of Animal Industry in the Alabama cattle-feed ing experiments at prices ranging from $25 to $36 a head when fattened before being put upon the market.1 Good profits were made on raising and feeding them. Excerpt from Proceedings of a Conference of Federal and State Representatives to Consider Plans for the Eradication of the Cattle Tick: Helt at Nashville, Tenn; December 5 and 6, 1906 Ten counties injthe northern part of the State and three in the southern part have been agreed upon as working ground for the next Season. Virginia. - The cooperation has been between the State board of control and its veterinarian and the county authorities on the one hand, and the Bureau force, averaging about nine inspectors and four agents, on the other. The working force of the State has been forty one local inspectors, whose employment has ranged from two weeks to three months each. The work was confined largely to eleven counties, though some inspections were made and some educational work was done in five other counties preliminary to next season's operations. The manner of the inspection has been to make a farm to-farm canvass of the live stock, usually with the local inspector, and, if premises were infected, to ascertain if they were quarantined, and if not, to report the fact to the local inspectors. Such places were thereafter revisited periodically to see if disinfection was being properly accomplished, and in most cases it was found that this was being done. The number of cattle. Excerpt from State Laws and Court Decisions Relating to Cattle-Tick Eradication Sec. 14. Any person or corporation who shall violate the provisions of this act, being either the owners of such cattle, or carriers or driver for hire or otherwise, shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor, and upon conviction thereof be fined in any sum not less than fifty dollars nor more than two hundred dollars. Sec. 15. Any citizen of this State shall have the power, and it shall be the duty of all peace officers of the respective counties of this State, to stop any cattle driven or transported or being transported across said quarantine line from south to north, and impound and drive or transport said cattle back south of the said quarantine line; and all costs and expenses incurred by such citizen or peace officer incurred in impounding or driving such cattle back south of said quarantine line shall be taxed as costs against the person or corporation convicted of. Excerpt from The Cattle Tick: This Pest Can Be Destroyed There are various kinds of species of ticks to be found on cattle in the Southern States, but the one that chiefly concerns us here is that commonly called the cattle or Texas-fever tick. It is the one most frequently found on cattle and is much more abundant than the other species. When the losses occasioned by this parasite are once thoroughly understood by farmers and stockmen there will be little need for arguments in favor of tick eradication. Some of the losses are not directly noticeable and consequently make little impres sion, while other losses properly chargeable to the tick are frequently attributed to other causes. It is hardly necessary to emphasize the important fact that the tick is something more than a simple parasite drawing blood from his host, it being the carrier of a dangerous micro-organism or germ, which it transmits to the blood of cattle, thus causing a disease known by many names, among which are Texas fever, tick fever, splenetic fever, and murrian. Without the tick there can be no Texas fever, and it is by preventing the Spread of the tick beyond its natural bounds that the fever has been prevented from waging destruction among Northern-cattle, which are especially susceptible to the disease. In order to restrict the distribution of the tick the national and state government maintain a quarantine line extending from the Atlantic to the Pacific coast, marking the boundary between the states or portions of states harboring this pest and those that do not. Cattle of the quarantined area can not be driven across this line, and may be shipped only in accordance with the regulations of the Secretary of Agriculture to prevent the spread of splenetic fever of cattle.
