L'Autore si considera un vero Restauratore poiché esercita il mestiere da più di 45 anni avendo restaurato per la Soprintendenza di Roma monumenti importanti come le chiese di Piazza del Popolo, il chiostro di S. Maria della Pace, il tempietto borrominiano di S. Giovanni in Oleo e in seguito tanti altri disseminati nel territorio nazionale, dal Piemonte alla Sicilia. Un “mestiere”, quello del restauratore, che svolge ancor oggi nel cantiere del Museo Egizio di Torino (opera di Guarino Guarini, di Garove, di Talucchi, e, quando sarà terminato, anche sua), con una continuità disciplinare tra la Storia e l'intervento di Restauro che pochi possono vantare. Con la “pratica” del mestiere che può avere solo chi proceda dallo studio dei documenti storici e delle tecniche costruttive del cantiere fino alla sua trasformazione in un edificio munito di un'altra destinazione rispetto a quella originaria, avendo avuto a che fare con tutte le fasi di numerosi Concorsi internazionali di progettazione, dalla Basilica palladiana di Vicenza alla Venaria Reale presso Torino. A cominciare dalla costituzione del Cantiere, ai rapporti con le imprese e coi loro operai, nonché ai rapporti con le istituzioni preposte alla Tutela: le Soprintendenze ed i sommi gradi del Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali, ogni volta direttamente interessati a quei restauri, approvati dopo istruttive discussioni negli uffici e sul cantiere. Il libro mette dunque a diposizione del lettore una trentina di progetti e documenti di Restauro di monumenti di diversa dimensione realizzati in quasi cinquant'anni (dalla Fontana Maggiore di Perugia alla Venaria Reale al Teatro Carignano a Torino), accompagnati dalle fotografie delle fasi principali della realizzazione, al fine di mostrarne il percorso effettuato grazie alle mani della gente che contribuí ai lavori, divenuta nel corso di essi tanto affine all'Autore, e viceversa, quanto lo sono i concertisti di un'Orchestra nei riguardi del loro Direttore.
