Book Description
The author of Where the Ghosts Are: A Guide to Nova Scotia’s Spookiest Places details infamous, historic murders from Canada’s Maritime provinces. In his uniquely homespun style, sinister storyteller Steve Vernon digs up the dirt on Maritime murders from 1770 to 1929—along with a few bodies along the way. Unearthing historically buried, and occasionally unsolved, violent crimes from across Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia, Vernon’s versions of these 19 macabre tales will chill you to the bone. Featuring a bevy of questionable characters from the darkest recesses of Maritime history, Maritime Murder divulges a diverse array of bygone crimes, trials, and the eerie aftermath. From botched executions and poisonous tea, to “axe” murders and curious cover-ups, bear witness to the villains and victims of some of the dastardliest deeds this side of the Atlantic. Praise for Steve Vernon “Writing with a rare swagger and confidence, Steve Vernon can lead his readers through an entire gamut of emotions from outright fear and repulsion to pity and laughter.” —Cemetery Dance

Book Description
Books about death are invariably about life. In her book Memento Mori, Muriel Spark says: “Death, when it approaches, ought not to take one by surprise. It should be part of the full expectancy of life. Without an ever-present sense of death life is insipid. You might as well live on the whites of eggs.” In that vein, this book deals with the ever-present reality of death while concurrently embracing life. It celebrates the lives of the greatest generation while alerting aging baby boomers to be aware of what is waiting for them around the next corner. As the clients in this book journey through the final stages of their lives toward death and the feeling that time is running out, Hope, the protagonist, conversely journeys toward a richer and fuller life. As clichéd as this sounds, this thoughtful book encourages readers to celebrate life and to live each day as the gift it is.

Book Description
Will Fisher volunteers to recruit fellow alums he hasn't seen for forty-five years to attend the 2007 Alumni Reunion of the Poitiers American High School. As an American teenager coming-of-age in France in the late 1950s, Will has special memories of how joining the closely-knit military community made a life altering impact on him and his new friends. Until the reunion weekend, he didn't know how much of an impact. Reunited, The Life and Loves of an Army Brat, is a nostalgic, intricately plotted, multi-generational novel of how Will, through conversations on the phone and during the reunion weekend, relives his unique high school experiences in France and how he and the first two loves of his life, SueAnn and Sloane, have fared since their return to the U.S. His Army Brat background helps him bond with Gina, his future wife, and how, through a Fisher family connection, Gina discovers the details of her deceased mother's experiences during the Holocaust. At the reunion's closing brunch at Will's and Gina's home, SueAnn's glancing at a photo, triggers a long suppressed memory that leads to a stunning discovery that SueAnn, Will, and their families have to resolve.

Book Description
Readers of my earlier book--a memoir--may have been left with mixed feelings about it. Perhaps they felt that there was "something" wrong or missing. Maybe there was nothing redemptive about it or it had no "purpose". Maybe it seemed unfinished or was just "off". It was hard to put your finger on. After publication, I eventually came to realize these things, but never quite knew what the exact problem was. I just knew that it was out-of-balance. In 1999, a book that was written by David's oldest brother was published. I didn't read it until maybe seven years later, but when I did, I was instantly free. The book told in some detail what it was like to be a child in the Ruffin house. Time and place notwithstanding, the fact is that the father was extremely cruel to them. At that point, I was able to see David as a victim himself. Reading the details of those horrific experiences freed me of the anger, resentment and bitterness I had harbored for many years over how David had treated me and even our son. In the place of those feelings came a feeling of understanding; yes, even the gift of compassion. I understood that abuse was all he was ever taught; I was more than willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. I forgave him. After all, how is a boy to learn what it is to be a man if he isn't taught by his father's Godly example? Thus, I was led to rewrite my memoir by giving my "testimony" of coming to Jesus in 2004 and by allowing people to know about David's childhood. I was also given other corrections, and title and cover. Now it all makes perfect sense!
