À partir des années 1960, s’est produit, en France comme dans la plupart des pays industrialisés, un changement des mentalités et des comportements en matière familiale et sexuelle. Émergent alors une nouvelle image de la famille et une modification des rapports homme/femme, remettant en cause le modèle de famille dominant. Ces mutations ont eu pour effet de rendre la structure familiale plus précaire. C’est dans ce contexte général qu’apparaissent, dans le milieu des années 1970, les familles dites monoparentales ; non pas au sens où elles n’existaient pas précédemment, mais dans la mesure où nombre de commentaires soulignent leur prolifération. Réalité statistique ou mutation du regard inhérent au profond changement des mentalités ? Toujours est-il qu’elles suscitent nombre de discours dont l’écho laisse entendre qu’il s’agit là d’une réalité nouvelle en pleine mutation. Ces évolutions qui affectent l’organisation des structures familiales ne sont pas seulement affaire de représentations et de pratiques. La manière dont la société, et plus particulièrement l’État, prend en compte la famille par le biais de diverses politiques, quitte à promouvoir un modèle familial plutôt que d’autres, joue ici un rôle fondamental. Le traitement social de la monoparentalité participe donc de ces mutations. Conçu comme un outil de travail à l’usage des professionnels du secteur social, des étudiants et de tous ceux qui s’intéressent à l’évolution parallèle des structures et des politiques familiales aujourd’hui, l’ouvrage de Didier Le Gall et Claude Martin fait le point sur les foyers monoparentaux. Il aborde leur évolution au niveau quantitatif, analyse les politiques et les mesures sociales dont ces familles font l’objet, et, enfin, met en relief la diversité des discours tenus par ces parents eux-mêmes sur leur propre situation.
