Book Description
. Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book Description
Excerpt from Ideals, Aims and Methods in Education The New Educator's Library presents in a convenient form that is likely to appeal to many specialist teachers and others whose interest lies in a select few of the aspects of Education much of the subject matter of The Encyclopaedia and Dictionary of Education recently issued by the Publishers; in fact, the scheme is due in great measure to the suggestions of many readers of the latter work, pointing out the desirability of issuing in sectional form the authoritative contributions on the various subjects. It is hoped that these little books embodying as they do, the results of research and experience of educationists and others of high distinction in their subjects, will serve a really useful purpose to teachers, to students, and to many others connected with or interested in educational matters. The following pages are offered as a angges tion of one way to foster such ideals. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Democratic Ideal in Education IN our land there is to-day considerable discussion upon educational matters. Appeals are made sometimes to our reason, and sometimes to our prejudices, and considerable bitterness of feeling is aroused and displayed, and generally much pother is created upon matters that are only incidentally educational. Let us trust that out of this evil good may come. Let us hope that what is at present an interest produced artificially, and with much labour, may become perennial and natural. Let us seize this golden opportunity to make our people permanently interested in this fateful problem of national education, so that the popular apathy, which in the past has been our curse, may develop into a popular vigilance, without which no truly national system is possible. But popular vigilance needs popular intelligence. Until our people can be made to see the true inwardness of their own instinctive faith, until they can be made to realise what national training means, and to understand why we need a better system of education - not, indeed, to beat the German, but to beat the devil - only when these matters have become part of our common faith may we look for the regeneration of this land. Book Description
Excerpt from A Theory of Motives, Ideals, and Values in Education It becomes, therefore, a part of my obligation to dis cuss civilization, success, education, and progress, for until the terms are defined, neither agreement nor con elusion, neither satisfaction nor enlightenment is possi ble. I must, of course, take for granted certain matters, for education is not a basic science, but rather one that utilizes as its own postulates the conclusions of other sciences. Indeed, by some, the proposition that educa tion is a science is challenged. In this book, I do not discuss these postulates, though I state and, in some instances, illustrate them. The philosophy of education is not quite synonymous with the science of teaching, and the profession of edu cation is not at all coterminous with the art. Teaching is artistic education architectural, architectonic. From want of this distinction, there have been confusion and conflict. This distinction I draw, following it with various conclusions and applications that appear pertinent to the needs and conditions of this American democracy. Book Description
Excerpt from The Permanent Values in Education These brief studies are offered as hors d' uvres for the neglected feast of educational history. We are perhaps in sight of the time, long overdue, when teachers will have full opportunity and incentive to learn the elements of their art before they are called to its practice; and when that time has come a book of this kind will be superseded, as it ought to be superseded, by the mere minimum of recollection that every teacher will carry in his own mind from the historical side of his training in pedagogy. Meanwhile, many teachers have never opened a book that tells any part of the inspiring story. It is literally inspiration, not only instruction, of which they deprive themselves. It might seem a harsh exaction to demand that the schoolmaster and mistress, when classes are over, paper work corrected and to-morrow's lessons prepared (if they prefer, with Thring, to give children to drink from a running stream, not from a stagnant pool), should give their hour of leisure to an arid absorption in the history of ideals ancient and outworn.
