Author: Ted Hughes
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780571192632
Category : American poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 143
Book Description
What has happened to the lost art of memorising poems? Why do we no longer feel that it is necessary to know the most enduring, beautiful poems in the English language 'by heart'? In his introduction Ted Hughes explains how we can overcome the problem by using a memory system that becomes easier the more frequently it is practised. The collected 101 poems are both personal favourites and particularly well-suited to the method Hughes demonstrates. Spanning four centuries, ranging from Shakespeare and Keats through to Thomas Hardy and Seamus Heaney, By Heart offers the reader a 'mental gymnasium' in which the memory can be exercised and trained in the most pleasurable way. Some poems will be more of a challenge than others, but all will be treasured once they have become part of the memory bank. This edition is part of a series of anthologies edited by poets such as Don Paterson and Simon Armitage and features an attractive new design to complement an anthology of classic poems.

Bright Dead Things
Author: Ada Limón
Publisher: Hachette UK
ISBN: 1472154576
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 112
Book Description
'Bright Dead Things buoyed me in this dismal year. I'm thankful for this collection, for its wisdom and generosity, for its insistence on holding tight to beauty even as we face disintegration and destruction.' Celeste Ng, author of Everything I Never Told You A book of bravado and introspection, of feminist swagger and harrowing loss, Bright Dead Things considers how we build our identities out of place and human contact - tracing in intimate detail the ways the speaker's sense of self both shifts and perseveres as she moves from New York City to rural Kentucky, loses a dear parent, ages past the capriciousness of youth and falls in love. In these extraordinary poems Ada Limón's heart becomes a 'huge beating genius machine' striving to embrace and understand the fullness of the present moment. 'I am beautiful. I am full of love. I am dying,' the poet writes. Building on the legacies of forebears such as Frank O'Hara, Sharon Olds and Mark Doty, Limón's work is consistently generous, accessible, and 'effortlessly lyrical' (New York Times) - though every observed moment feels complexly thought, felt and lived.

Poems from the Heart of a Woman
Author: Glenda Faye Bagley
Publisher: iUniverse
ISBN: 9781475941517
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 68
Book Description
My mother, Lovella Bagley had ten children. She taught her family about Jesus and the biblical principles of His word. Her dream was to write a book about her husband and all her children. She was married to Lee Earnest Bagley, Sr. for sixty-five years; he went home to be with the Lord on December 12, 2009. My father had a good sense of humor and an extraordinary personality. He provided for his family by working at an apartment complex as a Supervisor of Plumbing- in Lubbock, Texas. In my upcoming book, Why am I Here?I will talk about specifics in our familys life. Our mother was diagnosed with Alzheimers at the age of seventy-five and I watched her sad face as the doctor gave her the news. I watched her go from a vibrant woman to being in a wheelchair. She was determined to finish writing her poetry in her journal because she was quickly losing her memory. Her impeding illness did not discourage her even though she continued to struggle to remember names, events and wording. Every night she wrote poems and short stories in her journal that she kept in a silver briefcase. Some years passed and my siblings and I became her caregivers. Throughout the years, I thought about that silver briefcase as our family had relocated to Dallas, Texas. My brother Rodney decided to take a trip to Lubbock, Texas to visit relatives. During his visit, Rodney went to his storage to get furniture and other items to take back to Dallas. As he walked through the storage he looked next to a wall and there laid the silver briefcase that held my mothers poems. I was so excited; I knewthere has to be a reason for us findingthe silver briefcase. In my book, Poems from the Heart of a Woman it presents poetry written by my mother as well as myself.
