Nel 1966, quando questo libro venne pubblicato nella collana BMM di Mondadori, esso rispondeva all'esigenza di avere un'esposizione chiara e limpida dei concetti fondamentali della fenomenologia - indirizzo filosofico che si andava sempre più diffondendo in Italia. Di qui il suo disegno molto semplice, ma altrettanto preciso che, dopo una introduzione di carattere orientativo su Husserl e sul movimento fenomenologico, mette a fuoco le questioni di metodo e di contenuto che questo indirizzo solleva. Così vengono prese in considerazione le argomentazioni scettiche che, approdando al dubbio cartesiano, aprono il tema dell'intenzionalità e della soggettività. Un ampio spazio viene dedicato alla fenomenologia della percezione ed al nuovo tema, emergente nella discussione con il marxismo, di una possibile fenomenologia del bisogno. A distanza di tanti anni, il libro non ha perso la sua vitalità, ancor più avvivata dalle notevoli integrazioni e aggiornamenti curati da Vincenzo Costa nel 2000.

A questo volume che raccoglie scritti degli anni 1962-1968, l'autore ha ritenuto opportuno premettere una Presentazione scritta nel 2013. In effetti quegli anni sono stati cruciali per molti aspetti della storia e cultura italiana, ma sono certamente anni remoti e le tematiche allora discusse vanno ridestate. As the collection of material was conduded in lune 1997, the list of publications for the year 1997 is of course incomplete. In this bibliography publications in the following languages have been induded: German, English, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Dutch - for both primary and secondary literature. Since this bibliography has been based primarily on the consultation of the induded documents (and not restricted to copying already existing bibliographies), it was not possible to indude publications in languages other than those mentioned. The bibliography has been constructed in the following way: 1. The list of Husserl's works and secondary literature by individual authors is preceded by a list of all edited volumes in which a text by or on Husserl is published. This list is ordered chronologica11y and runs from 1921 ti11 1997 (inclusive). Edited volumes of the same year are classified according to language, and this in the order mentioned above: German, English, French, etc. Edited volumes with a title in more than one language are classified according to the above order of languages (this of course concerns only the title of the edited volume, not the title(s) of the individual contributions). This order is maintained throughout the other parts of the bibliography.

This volume explores Husserl’s theory of sensibility and his conceptualization of spatial and temporal constitution. The author maps the linkages between Husserl’s ‘transcendental aesthetic’, the theory of pure experience in empirio-criticism, as well as Immanuel Kant’s transcendental philosophy. The core argument in this analysis centers on the relationship between spatiality and temporality in Husserl’s philosophy. The study interrogates Husserl’s understanding of the relationship between spatiality and temporality in terms of stratifications, analogies and parallelisms. It incorporates a discussion of the potentialities and limitations of such an understanding. It concludes that such limits can be overcome by adopting an understanding of spatiality and temporality as interwoven moments of sensible experience—a ‘spatio-temporal intertwining’. This ‘intertwining’ is made explicit in a thorough inquiry into three central topics in the phenomenological analysis of sensible experience: spatio-temporal individuation, perspectival givenness and bodily experience. The book shows how such an inquiry can form the bedrock of a dynamic and relational understanding of experience as a whole.

L'esistenza di un rapporto tra la ricerca fenomenologica e la psicologia della forma era già stata documentata da Merleau-Ponty, ma non vi potrebbe essere distanza maggiore tra il modo in cui le due correnti di pensiero si incontrano nel filosofo francese e il modo in cui ciò avviene in questi saggi di Giovanni Piana. Di questa differenza è certamente responsabile l'importanza che riceve in Giovanni Piana il concetto di struttura riportato in ambito fenomenologico, in rapporto al quale si articola il primo saggio che teorizza con particolare chiarezza l'idea di "strutturalismo fenomenologico".
