Book Description
Excerpt from Hysteria Neurasthenia I have attempted in this little book to give a concise account of Hysteria and Neurasthenia. The clinical aspect of these diseases has been kept in view throughout. The literature of the subject is now so enormous that without very greatly exceeding my limits it was obviously impossible to deal at all fully with it, but it would not be right for me not to acknowledge, even thus imperfectly, my great indebtedness to former writers, and especially the more recent ones, on Hysteria and Neurasthenia. The perusal of their works, so many of them distinguished by wealth of observation and breadth of knowledge, makes me fully conscious of my own shortcomings. Whilst, however, my endeavour has been to keep within moderate limits, and to give the results of my own clinical observation, I trust that I have left out nothing of importance, and that this little work may prove of some service as a practical guide, and that the statements made in it have at least the merits of accuracy and clearness. Book Description
As the United States rushed toward industrial and technological modernization in the late nineteenth century, people worried that the workplace had become too competitive, the economy too turbulent, domestic chores too taxing, while new machines had created a fast-paced environment that sickened the nation. Physicians testified that, without a doubt, modern civilization was causing a host of ills—everything from irritability to insomnia, lethargy to weight loss, anxiety to lack of ambition, and indigestion to impotence. They called this condition neurasthenia. Neurasthenic Nation investigates how the concept of neurasthenia helped doctors and patients, men and women, and advertisers and consumers negotiate changes commonly associated with “modernity.” Combining a survey of medical and popular literature on neurasthenia with original research into rare archives of personal letters, patient records, and corporate files, David Schuster charts the emergence of a “neurasthenic nation”—a place where people saw their personal health as inextricably tied to the pitfalls and possibilities of a changing world.

Book Description
Originally published in 1895, this early work of psychology is both expensive and hard to find in its first edition. It contains Freud and Breuer's case studies of hysteria and their methods of psychoanalytic treatment. This is a fascinating work and is thoroughly recommended for anyone with an interest in the history of psychology. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.
