Book Description
Rising gas bubbles in bubbling fluidized beds are important for all hydrodynamics related phenomena, e.g. mass transfer, gas bypassing, heat transfer, gas-solids mixing, etc. However, still many interactions of bubbles with specific operation conditions in fluidized beds are unknown. In this work, fluidized beds with vertical heat exchangers are investigated. Vertical heat exchangers are in this case used to remove the heat of reaction from the exothermal methanation reaction for the production of synthetic natural gas (SNG) from wood. Several vertical tube bank configurations varying in their diameter, tube-to-tube spacing, and arrangement (square vs. triangular) have been immersed into a lab-scale fluidized bed. By means of optical probing and pressure fluctuation measurements, their influence on the rising gas bubbles has been evaluated by means of statistical tools. Findings from these experiments are furthermore used to develop a modified approach to scale up fluidized beds with vertical internals.

Book Description
The objective of this investigation is to numerically predict the effect of an electric field on a two-dimensional gas-solid fluidized bed. The particles in the bed are taken to be of a uniform size and density forming the particulate phase with a gas (air) taken as the continuum phase. A hydrodynamic model of fluidization utilizes the principles of conservation of mass and momentum describing the multiphase flow equations along with the constitutive equations of gas-solid drag and solids stress. A two-dimensional unsteady-state computer code (K-Fix) was used to observe the effect of an electric field on the gas and solid velocities and the void fraction and pressure in the bed. Special case studies included that of a jet, a bubble, and two bubbles, with and without an electric field.

Book Description
Since the late 1970s there has been an explosion of industrial and academic interest in circulating fluidized beds. In part, the attention has arisen due to the environmental advantages associated with CFB (circulating . fluidized bed) combustion systems, the incorporation of riser reactors employing cir culating fluidized bed technology in petroleum refineries for fluid catalytic cracking and, to a lesser extent, the successes of CFB technology for calcina tion reactions and Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. In part, it was also the case that too much attention had been devoted to bubbling fluidized beds and it was time to move on to more complex and more advantageous regime,S of operation. Since 1980 a number of CFB processes have been commercialized. There have been five successful International Circulating Fluidized Bed Confer ences beginning in 1985, the most recent taking place in Beijing in May 1996. In addition, we have witnessed a host of other papers on CFB funda mentals and applications in journals and other archival publications. There have also been several review papers and books on specific CFB topics. However, there has been no comprehensive book reviewing the field and attempting to provide an overview of both fundamentals and applications. The purpose of this book is to fill this vacuum.

Book Description
Since the pioneering text by Mathur and Epstein over 35 years ago, much of the work on this subject has been extended or superseded, producing an enormous body of scattered literature. This edited volume unifies the subject, pulling material together and underpinning it with fundamental theory to produce the only complete, up-to-date reference on all major areas of spouted bed research and practice. With contributions from internationally renowned research groups, this book guides the reader through new developments, insights and models. The hydrodynamic and reactor models of spouted and spout-fluid beds are examined, as well as such topics as particle segregation, heat and mass transfer, mixing and scale-up. Later chapters focus on drying, particle-coating and energy-related applications based on spouted and spout-fluid beds. This is a valuable resource for chemical and mechanical engineers in research and industry.
