Book Description
Excerpt from Hunting Sketches Ir seems to be odd, at first sight, that there should be any such men as these but their name and number is legion. If we were to deduct from the hunting-crowd farmers, and others who hunt because hunting is brought to their door, of the remainder we should find that the men who don't like it have the preponderance. It is pretty much the same, I think, with all amuse ments. How many men go to balls, to races. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Sketches in the Hunting Field A few words about the papers themselves. They are for the most part sketches from life with embellish ments; but in only two or three instances do the names given to the characters point in the slightest degree to their real identity. Some of the Sketches are records of more or less eventful days with the hounds. Most of the anecdotes related are matters of fact. Book Description
Excerpt from A Sportsman's Sketches This edition of Ivan Turgenev's best known work contains fourteen of the twenty-five sketches which appear in the full two-volume editions. A selection has been made of the best and includes all those in which the flavour of the open air is strongly marked. The editor has been fortunate in being able to arrange to use Mrs. Constance Garnett's translation, which is by far the best rendering in English that has been made. Translators of Russian commonly fail in one of two ways. Either their efforts to preserve the finer shades of meaning of the original text result in English which is forced and artificial, or the desire to render colloquially the method of speech of the Russian peasant entirely destroys the character of the author's style. Mrs. Garnett avoids both these pitfalls; for while her rendering leaves nothing to be desired as regards the quality of the English, the subtle nuances of the Russian text are. Book Description
Excerpt from Duck Shooting and Hunting Sketches Duck shooting is a science; likewise an art. The seasoned duck shooter smiles at the quail hunter, the snipe shooter, and the man who eases around in a buck-board after prairie chickens. They are mostly parlor shooters in his opinion. Whisper, now - men take their lives in their hands quite a bit who follow the sport of duck shooting. The marshes and lakes take something of a toll of human life in that respect, and more than a few good staunch fel lows have gone under in the sink-holes, perished from exposure, or drowned in sight of shore while following their favorite hobby. You need to be some resemblance to a man to go after ducks year in and year out. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Sportsman's Sketches, Vol. 2 Give me your hand, gentle reader, and come along with me. It is glorious weather; there is a tender blue in the May sky; the smooth young leaves of the willows glisten as though they had been polished; the wide even road is all covered with that delicate grass with the little reddish stalk that the sheep are so fond of nibbling; to right and to left, over the long sloping hillsides, the green rye is softly waving; the shadows of small clouds glide in thin long streaks over it. In the distance is the dark mass of forests, the glitter of ponds, yellow patches of village; larks in hundreds are soaring, singing, falling headlong with outstretched necks, hopping about the clods; the crows on the highroad stand still, look at you, peck at the earth, let you drive close up, and with two hops lazily move aside. On a hill beyond a ravine a peasant is ploughing; a piebald colt, with a cropped tail and ruffled mane, is running on unsteady legs after its mother; its shrill whinnying reaches us. Book Description
Excerpt from Covert-Side Sketches: Or Thoughts on Hunting Suggested by Many Days in Many Countries With Fox, Deer, and Hare Depend upon it that the deep-set eye, thin nostril, and arched brow are not to be baulked of excitement. The possessors of these - I may say gifts - live and are formed for excitement. If not satiated in one way, and that an innocent, manly, and useful one, your boys may take to the gaming-table, or to an excess of feasting, rioting, or debauchery. Excitement they must have or die. Let them, therefore, become bold riders, cunning hunters, rifiemen of the woods. Inure them to toil while they are young, and a green Old age shall reward them for their choice, and they shall be thankful to you for your encourage ment and advice. Book Description
Excerpt from Sketches of the West During the night the chief informed his band of the determina tion of the white hunter, and when Snowden took his departure for the north next morning, the whole village assembled to bid him godspeed, in their simple yet emphatic way, upon what they conceived to be a most desperate undertaking. They beat their rude drums, danced up and down and sang their wildest songs until the hunter was lost both to sight and hearing. Book Description
Excerpt from Men I Have Fished: Sketches of Characters and Incidents With Rod and Gun, From Childhood to Manhood; From the Killing of Little Fishes and Birds to a Buffalo Hunt These sketches originally appeared in the Forest and Stream. Read between the lines, and at times in them, will be found the wanderings of a boy who had no further object in view than to be in the woods and on the waters, and who had no taste for anything like the harness of civilization. During the years of vagabondizing many things occurred which at the time seemed to deserve little notice, but subsequently grew into pleasant memories; and I began to write them up, naturally expecting that my immediate relatives and personal friends would read them with some interest. I was surprised and gratified to find how many strangers said pleasant things of them, and to know that there was a demand for them in book form. The present volume comprises the twenty-four chapters which appeared between July 11 and Dec. 26, 1896. Other sketches of "Men I Have Fished With" have been printed since, and at this writing, in October, 1897, the series is in progress. I have aimed to make a sketch of the boy or man of whom I wrote, so that the reader, gentle or otherwise, would know him, as I thought I did, and I find myself telling how to bob for eels, camp out and sleep in barns, kill deer with wooden plugs, taking my first trout on a worm, hunting turtles with Colonel Raymond in boyhood and reviewing his famous setters in after years, shooting turkeys, spearing eels through ice, and many other things too numerous to mention, up to the time when I was glad to get back home.
