Book Description
Excerpt from Hunting Reflections These short chapters on some phases of hunting are a reprint of articles written for Game and Gun. Having been written at intervals, and without any idea of subsequent collection in book form, must be their excuse for their lack of continuity. This does not pretend to be anything like a com plete manual of the sport and are merely reflec tions that occurred to me at the time. Although meant chiefly as a little assistance to beginners at the game, experts might find some of the ideas worth their consideration. Hunting is an ab sorbing subject and the last word on it will never be written, so that even this modest contribution may provide something for discussion. When two or three enthusiasts are gathered together many pleasant hours can be spent in exchanging ideas on hounds and hunting. Foxhunting is the main theme in these pages, but an article The Beagle and the Hare was written at the same period, and has therefore been included. However, very many of the most successful amateur foxhound huntsmen have graduated with beagles, and this may not be out of place. Book Description
Excerpt from Reflections of a Moose Hunter: A Personal Résumé of the Serious, Picturesque, and Droll Aspects of Life in the Moose Country My annual excursions to the silent forests and the, rippling rivers Of Canada have given instruction, sport, amusement, and rest. I have been my own bookkeeper, so to speak, and entered on my ledger the receipts of joy ful experience. The investment has proved a wise one; I have cut my coupons of happiness and health, and each year extra dividends are declared. For my photographs I claim no credit, but to the neophyte they may indicate what any one can do with a little pocket kodak. Such results as are achieved by Mr. Chauncey J. Hawkins, the big game photographer, few of us may hope to equal, and to him I am grateful for the use Of one or two views. I S. S. Book Description
Excerpt from Hunting Talk It is usual in books of this kind to put forward in the Preface same reason or excuse for their appear ance. I have observed that publication is frequently ascribed to the advice of relatives and friends who, having read the manuscript, have so insistently urged that a wider public should be allowed to enjoy it, that a more or less modest and unwilling author has given way. In my case I have been unable to detect any such pressure. Even H. W. G. To whom I dedicate the work, gave me much assistance, but no direct encourage ment, although often able to keep awake while I read whole chapters. Of course, nobody really has all those initials. The letters stand for My Helper with Grammar and Spelling. For myself I must admit that, on reading over the manuscript for the last time, my chief feeling is one of amazement that anyone could make so fascinating a subject so dull. Book Description
Excerpt from A Hunting Catechism MY dear mother, - I had the honour on Thursday last to hunt with the King, which is a great diversion to me. The Duchess of Buck ingham's gentlemen-at-arms lent me a horse. I wished many a time when I rode by him, that I might have had the privilege to have altered (sic) my mind to him. We hunted the fox, and the King rides very hard, as any one almost in the field. He got two falls, but received no harm. After hunting, the King and his nobles drink a cup of wine and eat a piece of bread under any old hedge, and after the King I assure you I had the honour to do the same out of his gilt cups. After that we go to the house where the King takes coach, and eat some hot soft beef, and burnt ale. The place is about five or six miles out of town.
