Book Description
In 1996 William Angel launched a unique, pioneering study tracing the origin, growth and basic features of the international law of youth rights. It consisted of both source documents and commentary on the historical trends to elaborate and codify international instruments and standards in this field, as well as action taken by governmental, intergovernmental, and non-governmental organizations to promote and protect youth rights. It concluded with a call for a new international instrument and monitoring machinery to better promote and protect the rights of youth on a global basis. The aim of the current revised, updated and expanded edition of this ground-breaking work is twofold. First, to preserve and update the landmark historical research undertaken by William Angel and present it to today’s audience. Second, to introduce up-to-date analysis of the state of the International Law of Youth Rights and to provide an easy-to-use compilation of sources of law for researchers and practitioners active in this field. This important collection will provide a roadmap for readers to finding the various sources of the International Law of Youth Rights and a reference point for the most relevant legal documents in force. It aims to spark further legal, political and sociological research in the academic field, as well as support even stronger advocacy actions to further the rights of young people. Two volume set.

Book Description
This thoroughly revised edition of what has become the standard work in its field continues the original focus on the "nuts and bolts" of international human rights law and practice. Hurst Hannum and the contributors to this volume describe in detail regimes and procedures which have been developed during the past decade and evaluate the effectiveness of procedures which were only in their infancy in the early 1980s. The fifteen contributors, all specialists in their fields, offer a panoramic yet meticulously detailed survey of the many and varied techniques now available for the protection of human rights at global, regional, and national levels. A fully revised and updated set of appendixes, including a bibliographic essay which itself serves as a miniguide to the flourishing human rights literature, contains additional information useful to human rights lawyers, nongovernmental personnel, academics, and others interested in making the promotion and protection of human rights a reality. As democratization and other changes sweep through the world, the Guide seeks to ensure that human rights will have an important and influential place in whatever "new world order" the diplomats may devise.

Book Description
This book is an in-depth study of the African Charter of Human and Peoples' Rights, written with the insight of an insider. It assesses the effectiveness of the Charter and of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights in its formative years. It also compares the Charter with other major human rights instruments. The author asserts that respect for human rights made the existence of African societies possible despite the eras of gross violation. The survival of African societies, indeed their continued development, depends on respect for human rights. While conceding the universality of human rights, the author underscores African specificities and pecularities. He discusses the proper limits of `exclusively internal matters', as often claimed by African spokesmen, and puts forward the legitimate concerns of the international community as an effective check to arbitrariness and other violations. The book will be of special interest to international lawyers, law students, the judiciary and foreign office officials. The human rights activist will find it particularly useful in dealing with the African situation.
