Human beings everywhere around the globe have natural propensity towards success and progress in their endeavour and constantly seek fulfilment and happiness. It is this desire for fulfilment, happiness, success, and progress in man that pushes him towards hard work and creativity. However, often than not, the struggle to attain fulfilment and happiness in life is met with frustrations due to lack of wherewithal of carrying out the project. It could also be ascribed to the social structure such as bad governance, war, natural deserters, etc., which may hamper the free flow of activities geared towards ones success. In the presence of such frustrations, the victims can become disoriented, antisocial and antisociety. Such situation has serious consequences on peace in the world because this category of people often resort to different social vices like prostitution, intake of hard drugs, kidnapping, terrorism, armed robbery, suicide, et cetera, as the way of survival that spare doom to the society in which they live. It is to address this threat to world peace that, over the years, Fr. Edeh has distinguished himself in empowering people in different categories with little or no concern on tribe, creed, or nationality of those within his empowerment scheme. He has helped thousands of men and women to identify their God-given talents to attain fulfilment and happiness. Many of such people are now living happily on their own while a host of others are undergoing the training now. Interestingly, many of those who have successfully undergone the training in his skills acquisition centre are employers of labour today. Apart from this category of beneficiaries, there are over 12, 743 workers who are working in different establishments of Fr. Edeh and in this way fulfilled in their lives. Fr. Edehs remote conviction for venturing into human empowerment is to contribute his quota to the global project of world peace. It is his belief that world peace can only be attained when individual men and women are enjoying peace in their heartswhen hunger, poverty, diseases, frustration, illiteracy, and unemployment have been reduced to their barest minimum or even eradicated. This book therefore shows clearly how Fr. Prof. Edeh has achieved so much in empowering our teaming youths and this bringing peace in their hearts and thus peace in the world.

Violent conflicts today are complex and increasingly protracted, involving more nonstate groups and regional and international actors. It is estimated that by 2030—the horizon set by the international community for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals—more than half of the world’s poor will be living in countries affected by high levels of violence. Information and communication technology, population movements, and climate change are also creating shared risks that must be managed at both national and international levels. Pathways for Peace is a joint United Nations†“World Bank Group study that originates from the conviction that the international community’s attention must urgently be refocused on prevention. A scaled-up system for preventive action would save between US$5 billion and US$70 billion per year, which could be reinvested in reducing poverty and improving the well-being of populations. The study aims to improve the way in which domestic development processes interact with security, diplomacy, mediation, and other efforts to prevent conflicts from becoming violent. It stresses the importance of grievances related to exclusion—from access to power, natural resources, security and justice, for example—that are at the root of many violent conflicts today. Based on a review of cases in which prevention has been successful, the study makes recommendations for countries facing emerging risks of violent conflict as well as for the international community. Development policies and programs must be a core part of preventive efforts; when risks are high or building up, inclusive solutions through dialogue, adapted macroeconomic policies, institutional reform, and redistributive policies are required. Inclusion is key, and preventive action needs to adopt a more people-centered approach that includes mainstreaming citizen engagement. Enhancing the participation of women and youth in decision making is fundamental to sustaining peace, as well as long-term policies to address the aspirations of women and young people.

This book defines the relationship between gender and international security, analyzing and critiquing international security theory and practice from a gendered perspective. Gender issues have an important place in the international security landscape, but have been neglected both in the theory and practice of international security. The passage and implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (on Security Council operations), the integration of gender concerns into peacekeeping, the management of refugees, post-conflict disarmament and reintegration and protection for non-combatants in times of war shows the increasing importance of gender sensitivity for actors on all fronts in global security. This book aims to improve the quality and quantity of conversations between feminist security studies and security studies more generally, in order to demonstrate the importance of gender analysis to the study of international security, and to expand the feminist research program in Security Studies. The chapters included in this book not only challenge the assumed irrelevance of gender, they argue that gender is not a subsection of security studies to be compartmentalized or briefly considered as a side issue. Rather, the contributors argue that gender is conceptually, empirically, and normatively essential to studying international security. They do so by critiquing and reconstructing key concepts of and theories in international security, by looking for the increasingly complex roles women play as security actors, and by looking at various contemporary security issues through gendered lenses. Together, these chapters make the case that accurate, rigorous, and ethical scholarship of international security cannot be produced without taking account of women’s presence in or the gendering of world politics. The history of mankind has been dominated by wars, violence, restiveness, hunger, political and economic revolution, which are seemingly engineered by gross quest for political power, economic gain, territorial boundary, negative national pride, selfishness, greed, unwarranted man inhumanity to and cultural dominance. Consequently, even those who claim to be pursuing the courses of peace through war have found themselves in a more confused state because they live in fear of the vanquished that could turn against them any day. Those who have been conquered also live in fear as the victor becomes arrogant and inconsiderate. Realizing that the world is in dire need of peace, the general assembly of the United Nation Organisation (UNO) resolved on September 7, 2001, to observe September 21 as the International Peace Day. The assembly deemed it necessary, for the sake of peace, to observe that day as a day of ceasefire and non-violence. This was a way of bringing to public awareness the necessity of peace. The desire for peace was evident in that a number of agencies were founded by UNO to promote and foster peaceful coexistence among nations. But the question that still remains unanswered is, what are the achievements of these agencies over the years? It is obvious that warring nations even keep killing themselves on the eve of the International Peace Day. What a tragedy! Fr. Edeh observes that peace can be enthroned if and only if the dignity and essence of man is cared for, loved, and respected. For him, the dignity and essence of man stem from the fact that man is created by God who is good in se. Hence, man is good, that is, Mmadi. To fully realize the ontological goodness of man, Edeh insists that African philosophy should not be thought of in terms of theoretical and rational speculation but a lived philosophy of African culture, language, and religious background, which must be expressed in practical terms. Thus, the primary aim of this mission of practical and effective charity is to bring peace to the world by bringing peace to the heart of individuals who are abjectly poor, sick, marginalized, unemployed, and uneducated irrespective of race, colour, creed, social status, religion, or physical condition. This book therefore contains Fr. Edehs understanding of man as a dignified being because of his participation in the being of his creator (God).This concept of man stems from the African philosophy, which is as practical as it is theoretical. Consequently, pursuing peace, according to Edeh, has to go beyond just holding of conferences and presenting long speeches. He maintains that stakeholders in this all-important venture must put down certain concrete realities that will better the fate of man. His role model here is worth imitating if only world peace is to be truly realized.

The twenty-first century has brought with it a shift from the notion of human security being located in secure national borders to the need to secure the safety, freedom, and dignity of all. Despite efforts to equalize women’s status in the world evidenced by changes in many international projects requiring a gender focus, women and men experience most of the world in very different ways according to gender. Further, the reality is that humans who do not all fall neatly into one of these categories – male or female – often find their lives further challenged. In the 1980s, Peace and Conflict Studies first began to acknowledge and study the different experiences males and females have during war and peace. Since then, there have been books about women and war, women working at grassroots levels to build peace, women and transitional justice, women and peace education, and women’s views of human security. All of these works have contributed to the discourse of our changing world. This book brings together some of those themes and voices and adds more with the final product being more than the sum of its parts.
