Book Description
Excerpt from Home Grounds, Their Planning and Planting It is not sufficient to have a. Good number of plants: they should be placed with good taste. So this little book is about this subject - how to choose, arrange, and plant the home place. As every place is different, so is every one a problem by itself; but as there are controlling motives and regulations for painting and for music and for good writing, so are there certain guides to the disposition of the planting. The large and pretentious places - the estates - will have the advantage of the landscape architect's advice; all places profit greatly by such advice, often the small places even more than the large ones, yet the middle-class homes usually do not employ professional talent. This booklet cannot take the place of the artist who makes a study of a particular property. I know, however, that the artist will not be em ployed, perhaps even when he is most needed. Book Description
Excerpt from Landscape Garden Series Planning the Home Grounds Some philosophers interpret all human action as a result of desire to realize personal happiness. Considerable of that personal happiness centers around the great and beautiful wish that most of us cherish, to have a home or to have a better home. Is it any wonder, then, that so much effort in thought and time is expended in making this wish an accomplished fact? Naturally our first thought is for the building in which we live. It is always the house first, for that means comfort and shelter. The usual course is to begin by satisfying these demands. This is unfortunate, because it often leads to a complete neglect of consideration for the exterior. There is frequently no thought given to the setting of the home and to the fact that there should be outdoor rooms as carefully planned and furnished as those indoors. It is forgotten that as much pleasure can be had from planning and developing the grounds as from planning and furnishing the rooms within the house. But where there is cause for sorrow there is also cause for joy, for more and more is this condition being righted. More and more is the realization of the importance for the proper consideration of the grounds being feEvery properly planned place adds that much more to the cause. Improvements are observed, interest is aroused, and a more extensive and general desire is created. That which was considered non-essential is becoming to be looked on as an essential. The home owner who has previously thought but little of the landscape development of his grounds now turns with an inquiring eye to see what his neighbor has done and looks over his own place to sec what he can do. Is it any wonder that in this evolutionary state there has been considerable experimental work done and mistakes made from misguided effort? But this only proves that the universal wish is for the better type of home which means better houses and better grounds. Book Description
Excerpt from A Handbook for Planning and Planting Small Home Grounds: With a List of Native and Commonly Cultivated Plants That Are Represented in the Collection Upon the Stout Manual Training School Grounds The Stout Manual Training School, a complete system of travelling libraries, a travelling art gallery, with the collection of plants referred to and described in this handbook, and the other educational influences grouped about the school and leading out from it, have all grown out of the desire of a citizen of Menomonie to benefit a region wherein he has lived and which has contributed to his successful business career. It is worthy of record, too, that the town wherein this school is located, its leading citizens, and especially its women, have heartily cooperated with their benefactor in the rebuilding of the school since its total destruction by fire in 1897, the women alone agreeing to raise the money required for grading the grounds. Menomonie, Wisconsin, is a city of about 7, 000 inhabitants, on the Chicago St. Paul line of the Chicago Northwestern Railway systems. Also on a branch of the Chicago, Milwaukee St. Paul Railroad. Its principal industries are the manufacture of lumber and brick. There are extensive deposits of clay also found near by, suitable for the manufacture of pottery and porcelain.
