South Eastern Europe (SEE) is a varied region containing a population of about 56 million which has experienced significant civil conflict, political upheaval and economic transition over recent years. This situation has led to an increase in the factors that can lead to the spread of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. Whilst there is a reported low prevalence of the disease in the region overall, this is generally thought to underestimate its regional prevalence.
