Infantry (First Infantry Illinois National Guard) In the World War: Narrative, Operations, Statistics Following each name will be found a notation, if killed, wounded or gassed, when necessary to so classify. Gassed cases have been divided into two classes, serious and slight. The reason for this classification is due to the fact that men sent to Aid Stations, completely exhausted, were listed by the surgeons as slightly gassed. Large numbers of those so classified returned to the ranks in a few days, or a few hours after treatment, con sisting solely of warm drinks and rest. No record is obtainable, except through the War Department, con cerning men evacuated to army hospitals, general hospitals, or S. O. S. Consequently, such cases are herein listed as Dropped from the rolls, sent to hospital on such a date, as the case may be. Excerpt from History of the Two Hundred and Third Regiment: New York Infantry Volunteers In the following pages there is a record of the Two Hundred and Third Regiment, New York Volunteer Infantry, which tells the story of its organization, its service, and its muster out, facts of interest of those who served with the regiment, and important as part of the military history of the State and of the War. The 203rd had the trying experience of continuous camp life, unbroken by the interest and excitement of active campaigning. The one thing which the American Volunteer wants to do when he gets a gun in his hands, is to fight, and this spirit often resents the delays which are absolutely necessary to prepare a force for its most important work. It is doubtful if a regiment's discipline - that cornerstone of soldierly merit - could be put to a severer test than spending a year in camp, while other regiments are at the front. Digging sinks and ditches, policing camp, burning refuse, even drilling and marching, important as they all are, do not realize the young soldier's idea of war, to say nothing of his dream of glory. It is no light praise to say that the officers and men of the 203d, through the long and sometimes tedious months, worked honestly and persistently, and doggedly, when not cheerfully, to bring the regiment up to the high standards of the United States service. All cherished until the last a hope that they would see some active service, and until the last all strove to make the regiment so efficient that it could perform with credit any duty to which it might be assigned. In its Colonel the regiment had an able officer, who brought to it the best spirit of the army, and the officers as a body did their work faithfully in perfecting the regiment and in caring for the men. Excerpt from A Short History and Illustrated Roster of the 106th Infantry, United States, Colonel Frank H. Norton Commanding In the year 1844, the militia of Kings and Richmond counties constituted the Second New York Division, under command of Major General Underhill. A new regiment, the 265th, had been added to the 44th Brigade and its Colonel, Gilbert Reid, was in that year made Brigade Commander. These two men, with the best interests of the service at heart, had labored long for a better organization of the militia, and it was due in part to their activities that the Legislature of the State, on May 13, 1847, passed a bill calling for the reorganization of the State militia by con solidating and reducing the number of brigades and regiments. It was the general intention to encourage the formation of uniformed companies and place the citizen soldiery on a more distinctively military basis. Under the provisions of this bill, eight companies of light infantry, riflemen, grenadiers or infantry, were to form a regiment, with two additional flank - companies, one of cavalry and one of artillery. On or about the fifth of July, 1847, the 265th Regiment, according to the bill, became the 14th Regiment, New York State Militia. Previous to this time, there were no uniformed regiments, outside of the First Division, in the State. Colonel Willets had been appointed by the Governor of the State, in 1846, to organize the 14th Regiment and lay out the regimental district, but being unsuccessful, he had been relieved, and Phillip S. Crook appointed as Colonel to do this work. At a meeting held in Mrs. Prest's Military Garden, which stood where the County Court House is now located, these companies participated in an enthusiastic initial muster: National Guard, Company A, the Union Blues or City Grenadiers, already organized and uniformed. From various sources, principally from the Washington Guards, a volunteer organization attached to the No. 1 Fire Engine Company, there was quickly recruited the number of men required by law (thirty-two) for another company, which was duly inspected and designated as Company B.
