Book Description
Excerpt from The History of the Peloponnesian War I take occasion again to return my thanks to the chal cal professors and teachers, for the favor with which they have received my previous publications, and for the friendly interest which they have manifested in the present work. As soon as my evocations-will permit, I intend, if my life and health are spared, to offer them another volume, containing the remaining text of Thucydides, brief annotations, and copious verbal, historical, and grammatical indices of the whole work. Meanwhile I commit to their kind regards this volume, with the hope that it will contribute somew to the cause of classical learning in this country, and serve to introduce to more general use the writings of the man. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the Peloponnesian War The same plan has been pursued in the preparation of the notes, which I adopted in my previous publications, and it is hoped that this volume will betray no marks of less care and attention, in the selection of words and passages requiring comment, or in the kind and degree of assistance furnished to the student, than is manifest in those editions. To some it may appear at first sight that too much aid has been furnished the student. It will be seen upon exa mination, however, that it has not been indiscriminately bestowed, but in a way which always leaves much for the student himself to do. It will also appear, that I have not proceeded on the plan of selecting a few chapters on which to give a full commentary, and of leaving the other portions comparatively untouched, but have aimed to bestow upon every chapter and every section throughout the whole text, the amount of illustration which its difficulties seemed to require. Book Description
History of the Peloponnesian War Author: Thucydides Still, as the city is neither built in a compact form nor adorned with magnificent temples and public edifices, but composed of villages after the old fashion of Hellas, there would be an impression of inadequacy. Whereas, if Athens were to suffer the same misfortune, I suppose that any inference from the appearance presented to the eye would make her power to have been twice as great as it is. We have therefore no right to be sceptical, nor to content ourselves with an inspection of a town to the exclusion of a consideration of its power; but we may safely conclude that the armament in question surpassed all before it, as it fell short of modern efforts We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Book Description
Excerpt from The History of the Peloponnesian War, Vol. 2 The library of St. Mark contains also four other manuscripts of Thucydides, which I partially collated, and which are marked in this edition by' the letters W, X, Y, and Z. The first of these is marked in the library catalogue, 365. It is a small folio, written on paper, and contains Herodotus and the Hellenics of Xenophon, as well as Thucydides. Its date is about the fifteenth century. X is a large folio, written on paper, and of the date of the fourteenth century. It is numbered in the catalogue, 367. Y is a folio, also written on paper, and of the date of the fourteenth century. It is marked in the catalogue, Classis VII. Historia profana, cod. 50. This manuscript was taken to Paris by the French, and restored in 1815. It contains a great mass of unpublished scholia, written so illegibly, that the shortness of my stay at Venice did not allow me to decypher them. Z is a folio, on parchment, of the fifteenth century, marked in the catalogue, Classis VII. Cod. 5. It was formerly in the library of the Dominican convent of St. John and St. Paul at Venice. The two first books and half of the third were written by Pallas Strozzi, of Florence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The History of the Peloponnesian War, Vol. 1 of 2: Translated From the Greek of Thucydides; To Which Are Annexed, Three Preliminary Discourses Sir, The History of Thucydides hath been studiously read and admired by the greatest Princes, and may therefore presume to lay some claim to the Protection of Your Royal Highness. Great Britain, of all the States now existing in the world, most nearly resembleth what Athens was at the time when the War, which is the Subject of it, broke out in Greece. A love of Liberty, which hath erroneously been supposed to thrive and flourish best in a democratical Government, was then warm and active in every Athenian. Athens, it is true, had thus been raised to a great height of maritime power, and was become a very formidable State; But Faction disjointed a noble Plan, and at length brought on the loss of her Sovereignty at Sea. The Athenians soon ceased to be great, when they deviated from those salutary maxims, which their worthiest Patriots and most consummate Statesmen had recommended to their constant observance.
