Book Description
Excerpt from Popular History of the Jews, Vol. 2 Imitating the Roman example of proscription and confiscation, Herod's coffers were soon filled to overflowing with the confiscated property of his victims, and this enabled him to retain the favor of Antony who was ever in need of money for his riotous living and for satisfying the greed of Cleo patra. The people bore all these outrages resign edly; they were exhausted with the uprisings and the wars that continued, with slight interruption, for thirty-three years, since the death of Queen Alexandra, and that ruined the prosperity of the nation. They were longing for quietude and were glad to be ruled by a king who, outwardly at least, was an adherent of Judaism and who, it was to be hoped, would leave the customs of the fathers in tact. Moreover, Herod's shrewdness and energy in overcoming all obstacles gained him the admira tion and devotion of not a few people, and Herod did not fail to reward them richly for their loyalty. Oh the whole, though, Herod had little confidence in the natives; he felt that their dissatisfaction with the means he employed in gaining his mastery over them and with the manner in which he maintained it, could not be eradicated altogether. Accordingly, in filling positions of honor, he gave the preference to extra-palestinian Judaeans. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the Jews, Vol. 6 With the Index Volume, the yewis/z Pa /z'mfz'on Society ofamw/z'ca brings to a close the American edition of the History of the Jews by Professor H. Graetz. A glance at the title-page and the table of contents will show, that the celebrated historian cannot be held directly responsible for anything this volume contains. The History proper, as abridged under the direction of the author and translated into English from the eleven volume German edition, is complete in five volumes. In compiling this additional volume, the Publication Committee was prompted by the desire to render the work readily available for pedagogical purposes. To be of value to the general reader as well as to the scholar, a work containing upwards of three thousand pages needs to be equipped with indexes, tables, and helps of various kinds. Book Description
Excerpt from The History of the Jews IT is not frequent that an author on any Jewish subject receives the encouragement of a demand for a second edition of his book. My volume of Jewish history which is again submitted to the public, in tended primarily as a manual of instruction, is re vised chiefly by being brought up to date. This re vision became necessary owing to the great changes which the World War has produced in Central and Eastern Europe. Desiring not to enlarge the book too much, I have added merely the most important facts and names in modern Jewish history. In the chap ters dealing with the older epochs, only a few in significant additions have been made. Other changes are merely textual. It still remains for the intelligent teacher to explain the facts given in the book which, by the very nature of its intention, makes dry read ing for the uninitiated. Every history, no matter how large, is bound to be selective. My book, therefore, like every other on the subject, will be Open to criticism in regard to omissions. In the modern period especially, I have no doubt that some one will find certain names omitted, but I have conscientiously weighed the question in every instance and believe to have been impartial and to have deserved from fair-minded critics the Tal mudic compliment - that an author is to be com mended both for what he includes and for what he excludes. Book Description
Excerpt from Post-Biblical History of the Jews, Vol. 2 of 2: From the Close of the Old Testament, About the Year 420 B.C.E. Till the Destruction of the Second Temple, in the Year 70 C. E As soon as this important conquest had been achieved, Simon in person led his army against Gaza, a city which had revolted after the death of Jonathan. The walls were battered by his engines until suflicient breaches were made, and the Jews were on the point of storming, when the entire population of the city, men, women, and children, appeared on the walls with their clothes rent, and prayed for mercy with such doleful cries, that Simon took pity on them, and granted them a capitulation on the same terms as Joppa, replacing the Syrian population by Jews. The next year (142 B. O. E.) the fortress of Acre, which, for more than a quarter of a century, had been a grievous thorn in the side of the Jews, was after a close investment of two years starved into a surrender. Simon, who was anxious to get possession of a fortress impregnable to his utmost force, and to be subdued only by famine, granted a liberal capitulation as well to the Syrians as to the Jewish apostates who formed the garrison, whom he per mitted to march out and leave J udea peaceably and unmo lested. He himself at the head of his men, with palm-branches in their hands, and trumpets sounding, and singing psalms, marched to take possession with every demonstration of joy.
