Book Description
Excerpt from History of the Frankfort Cemetery We cherish the memory of the soldiers who gave their lives to the service of this country and who have thus secured for their native State an honored name among the states of the Nation. We rejoice that so many of the officers and men who won lasting fame for Kentucky during the wars in which this republic has been engaged, and who laid down their lives in the defense of their country, have been removed to' the State's beautiful necropolis, and that they now rest in the bosom of their native State and their bodies have become a part of the earth for which they gave their lives. We rejoice that our fathers have preserved in granite and marble the names of those men who fell in the defense of this country, and by so doing they testified to the world their regard for Kentucky's gallant dead. We are also proud of those great Kentuckians whose virtues and faithful service in civil life are lamps unto our feet and lights unto our path. Their purity of life, their wisdom and their patriotism make their dust the most sacred heritage of a patriotic people. All the nations of the earth have honored, and have striven to perpetuate, the memory of their great and good. The Jews carried with them the bones of Joseph, their benefactor, during their wanderings through the wilderness, while in search of the Promised Land. The pyramids of Egypt are monuments to the great men of an early civilization. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the Town of Frankfort Point - her decks were strewed with oil and set on fire, soon the magazine was reached and blown to frag ments. She contained in part the stores of the fleet, and it is said the shore was strewed with biscuits like flakes of snow. Some of her remains may still be seen imbedded in the mud. The sloops of war Mon mouth, Sally and Black Prince, each carrying 20 guns were destroyed at Hampden. The number of vessels in all destroyed between. Castine and Bangor was'33. The troops and marines were marched through the wilderness to Fort Halifax on the Kennebec opposite Waterville The first which went through used a compass and spotted trees as a guide to those who should follow, when they came to Long Pond in Unity they spotted a road on both sides of it, in consequence of which, the second party in following the trail went around the pond two or three times. The men suffer ed much on the march. Though there was abund ance of provision in the fleet, they were not provident enough to take a sufficient supply with them, and before they got through were obliged to resort to Indian cucumbers and the bark of trees for food. They were five days in performing the journey. The History of Frankfort, from which these sketches are taken, was written for an association of young people called The Mutual Improvement Society, by Erasmus Archibald Jones, about the year 1844. Mr. Jones was assisted by many of the early settlers whose memories were still fresh with the early scenes herein narrated, particularly Archibald Jones, Esq, and Tisdale Dean, gentlemen who took prominent parts in many of these incidents. Book Description
Excerpt from Rural Cemetery and Public Walk Were the many beautiful monuments and vaults that are now scat terad about Baltimore, and which, from their isolation, are sinking into neglect and dilapidation, erected together upon any scite of ground judiciously arranged, we do not hesitate to say, it would be more appreciated and more resorted to than any other public work that could be suggested. There is a feeling and solemnity about the habitations of the dead manifested by every people, and in every age of the world, that holds deep and tender communion with the natu ral impulses of the human heart.
