Book Description
Excerpt from History of the County of Lennox and Addington Doubtless many readers will think that some important events have been but lightly touched upon, and some may venture the criticism that undue prominence has been given. To others. In reply to the former I may say that I have endeavoured to make the most of the material at my command, and I would remind the latter that it is very difficult to measure the importance of preserving some apparently trifling bit of history. Above everything else I have aimed at accuracy, and while many errors mav have crept in unobserved, I feel confident that the general statements of Tacts are upon the Whole correct. I have been singularly fortunate in securing photographs of many of the county's most celebrated men. Some of these are copies from daguerreotypes, and others from faded photographs which are not in suitable condition for reproduction; but I feel that it is better to preserve imperfect likenesses of such men as Samuel Casey and Peter Perry than allow the opportunity to pass and lose all knowledge of their per sonal appearance. It lies midway between Kingston and Belleville, on the Grand Trunk railway, in the midst of an exceedingly rich and enterprising farm ing community. Napanee possesses an excellent water power of some thirty feet fall, capable of driving a large number of mills and manufactories, and as a grain market is unrivalled by any between Toronto and Montreal. The town is one of the most healthy and picturesque in Central Canada, and is becoming the centre of a large trade and commerce, and a place of no inconsiderable importance. 'at the present time it has a population of about which number is very rapidly increasing. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The War Work of the County of Lennox and Addington: Published Under the Auspices of the Lennox and Addington Historical Society The purpose of this volume is to place on record in an enduring form the achievements of the people of Lennox and Addington in the Great War. No event in the history of the county stirred them to such depths or called forth such prolonged and united efforts, the full effect of which no one can measure. The zeal displayed in the cause that lay so near to the hearts of Fall classes and ages was a revelation to themselves, for when they once grasped the full significance of the issues at stake, all other considera tions were laid aside and all their energies were centred upon the winning of the war. There were, of course, exceptions in both town and country; but these only emphasized the general rule that the great mass of the people were thoroughly alive to the needs of the situation. They were living in a new world, breathing a new but invigorating atmosphere and as they paused in their manifold efforts, when the war was at its fiercest stage, and looked back upon the peaceful days of a few years before, it all seemed strange to them. So, now, since the belligerents have laid down their arms, and we look back to the days of the war, we ask ourselves can it be that we actually passed through all those years of turmoil, strife, anxiety and sorrow? There is such a difference between peace and war that our very natures seem to have under gone a change in passing from the one to the other. They are so wholly irreconcilable, that we find it difficult to reconstruct in our minds a true picture of one period while we are engrossed in the other. If this be true of most of us so soon after the war has ceased, how essential it is thatwe should now, while events are fresh in our memories, endeavor to preserve for future generations a record of what took place in our own county and what was done by those whom we may fairly claim as representing our county during this most eventful period of our history. Many were the misgivings before the testing time actually arrived, as to how our soldier lads, with no previous military experience or training, would measure up with the regulars of the Old Country when brought face to face with the skilled fighting machine of the Teutons. All doubts were dispelled after their first baptism of fire. Indeed, their reputation for bravery and resourcefulness increased to such an extent, that the shifting of the Canadians to a new position on the Western front was a signal to the Germans immediately to strengthen that particular point and when General Haig required shock troops to pierce the Hindenburg Line, the Canadians were chosen for the per formance. Book Description
Excerpt from Lennox and Addington Historical Society, Vol. 10: Papers and Records; The Newspapers of the County; A Historical Survey of the Newspapers of Lennox and Addington Presented in the Form of Extracts From the Old Files Lennox and Addington did not boast a newspaper as early as many of the other counties of the province. That was due to the fact that Kingston was the county town and the press of that place was the first established in Upper Canada and appeared to serve the needs of the people of this part of the old County of Frontenac, Lennox and Addington. The first publication to enter the field was The Napanee Bee, which made its bow to the public on the 2nd of November, ad. 1860. The editor and proprietor was the Rev. G. D. Greenleaf, who resigned the pulpit for the editorial chair, and in the rear of the press - room spent his spare hours in making and mending furniture. In his dual occupation he never quite abandoned his ministerial functions and frequently officiated in the Methodist pulpit on Sundays, and regularly padded his columns with lectures on temperance and never missed an opportunity to expose what he conceived to be the weaknesses of the other denominations. The Bee was a five column sheet of four pages, which was occasionally enlarged to s1x columns when matter was plentiful and orders were not awaiting fulfilment in the cabinet making branch of the establishment. The editor found it necessary to apologize at times for reducing its size. This was generally due to the scarcity of paper, but on one occasion the explanation was as follows, One of our printers having taken French leave of us on Sabbath evening and taken sans cerem'onie a watch belonging to another from our office, our being obliged in consequence to lose a day in catching and properly disposing of the thief and getting back the watch are the principal reasons of our being under the necessity of allowing our sheet to go out in its present appearance.
