On October 16, 1859, John Brown and his band of eighteen raiders descended on Harpers Ferry. In an ill-fated attempt to incite a slave insurrection, they seized the federal arsenal, took hostages, and retreated to a fire engine house where they barricaded themselves until a contingent of US Marines battered their way in on October 18. The raiders were routed, and several were captured. Soon after, they were tried, convicted, and hanged. In summer 2016, the U.S. National Park Service began a study on the history and design of the National Park Service golf courses at East Potomac Park, Rock Creek Park, and Langston. As enthusiasm for the sport began in the early 20th century, the District of Columbia's public golf courses were built by the federal government for those who could not afford to play at the area's private clubs and as part of the expansion of parks and recreation facilities in the nation's capital.
