Book Description
The Georgia 12th Infantry Regiment completed its organization in June of 1861 at Richmond, Va. Upon its arrival in western Virginia, the regiment was assigned to H. R. Jackson's command and participated in Lee's Cheat Mountain campaign. As part of the famous Doles /Cook brigade from central and south Georgia they participated in Stonewall Jackson's Valley campaign, then fought with the Army of Northern Virginia from Seven Days to Cold Harbor. The 12th later took part in Early's Shenandoah Valley operations and the Appomattox campaign. An excellent first hand account of the Doles Cook Brigade was published by Henry W. Thomas of Company G of the 12th Georgia. From the introduction: "No brigade in the Confederate army did more service, or suffered more hardships, and none can boast of a prouder or more brilliant record than that made by the Doles-Cook Brigade. Its regiments were amongst the first to take arms in defense of the South, and did not lay them down until General Robert E. Lee surrendered the army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox Court-house, Virginia on the 9th day of April, 1865. On that fatal day the remnant of the Doles-Cook Brigade followed the Stars and Bars as gallantly, fought as bravely, and drove the enemy as steadily as they had done in the past. Not until then did they cease to bear arms in defense of the South. Read the history of all the armies of any nation, and you will not find a single one to compare to that of the Confederate army. They were intelligent, brave fearless and determined, but kind and gentlemanly in their bearings, respectful of their officers and obedient to orders. They did not fight for conquest or glory, but simply for the protection of their homes and the independence of the South. Book Description
The Georgia 4th Cavalry Regiment (AveryÕs) was formed with eleven companies in January, 1863, using Avery's 23rd Georgia Cavalry Battalion as its nucleus. It served for a time with the Conscript Department in Tennessee, then was assigned to J.J. Morrison's, C.C. Crews', and Iverson's Brigade. The regiment participated in the Chickamauga, Knoxville, and Atlanta Campaigns, skirmished in Northern Georgia and East Tennessee, and took part in the defense of Savannah. In January, 1865, the unit was reorganized and called the 12th Cavalry. It went on to fight in the Carolinas and surrendered with the Army of Tennessee. Research of this unit is complicated by the fact that there was another 4th Cavalry (ClinchÕs). No roster of the 23rd Cavalry Battalion or the 4th Cavalry (AveryÕs) has been found. The records are all filed in the state archive microfilm as the GA 12th Cavalry Regiment.
