Book Description
Life in Dixie During the War, first published in 1892, ranks among the best first-person accounts of the American Civil War. Mary A. H. Gay eloquently recounts her wartime experiences in Georgia and bears witness to the suffering and struggle, defeat and despair, triumph and hope that is human history. Mary Gay was not only a chronicler, but an active participant in wartime activities; old veterans described her as unusually brave and fearless. While her book reads like a novel, it continues to be praised by modern scholars as an honest report of American history.

Book Description
Before Fulton County, there was DeKalb County; before Atlanta, there was Decatur. It is a community rich in history and the "mother county" of the city of Atlanta. A tiny town called Terminus was established in 1846 and from this early settlement in DeKalb County, the South's most thriving city, its cosmopolitan center, was born. DeKalb County in Vintage Postcards depicts the tranquil days before the boom of Atlanta, revealing a landscape unfamiliar to present-day residents of the area. Postcard scenes of the famed Stone Mountain, Camp Gordon, and the historic neighborhood of Druid Hills are featured within these pages, along with a variety of churches and educational institutions.

Book Description
Trace the history of DeKalb County, from happenings during the Civil War to its rich natural beauty and landmarks. DeKalb County has a vast and interesting history spanning from Confederate general John Hunt Morgan's raids on the North during the Civil War to the building of Center Hill Dam, which formed a beautiful lake that brings thousands of tourists to the county each year. The lake, encompassing 18,220 acres, displaced thousands of the earliest settlers' descendants along the Caney Fork River. The state legislature established DeKalb County from parts of surrounding counties in 1837. The county was named after Revolutionary War general Johann DeKalb, while the county seat of Smithville was named after state senator Samuel Granville Smith; neither man was from the county.

Book Description
"The summer of 1996. In nineteen days, six million visitors jostled about in a southern city grappling with white flight, urban decay and the stifling legacy of Jim Crow. Six years earlier, a bold, audacious partnership of a strong mayor, enlightened business leaders and Atlanta's Black political leadership dared to bid on hosting the 1996 Olympic Games. Unexpectedly, the city won, an achievement that ignited a loose but robust coalition that worked collectively, if sometimes contentiously, to prepare the city and push it forward. This is a story of how once-struggling Atlanta leveraged the benefits of the Centennial Games to become a city of international prominence. This improbable rise from the ashes is told by three urban planning professionals who were at the center of the story."--Back cover.

Book Description
This book is about previously unidentified people who became Abolitionists involved in the antislavery movement from about 1840 to 1860. Although arrests were made in nearby counties, not one person was prosecuted for aiding a fugitive slave in DeKalb County, Illinois. First, the area Congregationalist, Universalist, Presbyterian and Wesleyan Methodist churches all had compelling antislavery beliefs. Church members, county elected officials, and the Underground Railroad conductors and stationmasters were all one and the same. Additionally, DeKalb County had the highest concentration of subscriptions to the Chicago-based Western Citizen antislavery newspaper. It was an accepted local activity to help escaped slaves. A biographical dictionary includes evidence and personal information for more than 600 men and women, and their families, who defied the prevailing Fugitive Slave Law, and helped the anti-slavery movement in this one Northern Illinois County. Unique photographs and illustrations are included along with notes, bibliography and index.
