Excerpt from Materia Medica Mexicana: A Manual of Mexican Medicinal Herbs It was the intention of the National Medical Institute to prepare a catalogue of the drugs displayed at the Paris Exposition of 1900, as it was judged insufficient to make a simple inventory without giving explanations of the characters of the drugs and of their botanical classification, physiological action, therapeutic applications and posology. Our motive was to extend thus a scientific knowledge of our medicinal plants among foreigners in order that those interested might know them more intimately and thus be enabled to use them, either in commerce or for medicinal purposes. But we were not successful in finishing this catalogue in time and, therefore, it was not sent to the said Exposition. Now, when it became necessary to make a new catalogue of drugs for the St. Louis Exposition, the former material which had been translated into French by Dr. Ricardo E.Cicero, was utilized; additional matter corrected as far as possible, new articles being inserted, and what was wanting in the French text, added. In this way what was originally intended for a simple catalogue became a work deserving the name of "Manual of Materia Medica Mexicana." It is based upon the extensive studies published in the Datos para la Materia Medica Mexicana, by the Mexican National Medical Institute from which I have extracted what seemed to me most important for medico-pharmaceutical application. I have also added other data, some from my own works, some from scientific works published by the personnel of the Institute, and still others from sources which I shall mention in their proper places.
