Microalgae
Author: Joel Fleurence
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1786305879
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 194
Book Description
Microalgae and cyanobacteria are the first organisms in the oceanic food chain and are essential producers of oxygen and effective carbon dioxide traps. They are traditional sources of food proteins for Aztec, African and Asian populations, and some of them have even acquired the status of superfoods. Microalgae reviews the biological, ecological and biochemical characteristics of microalgae and cyanobacteria. They are true cellular factories, producing substances of interest such as original pigments, proteins and polysaccharides with biological activities. Their use covers many sectors of human activity including aquaculture, livestock breeding, agri-food, and human and veterinary medicine. This book presents their mode of production and the transformation processes that are applied to them, as well as the traditional and future valorization of algae. As they are a source of lipids and fatty acids, microalgae have become the focus of attention for the development of green fuels, such as biofuel.

Marine Genetic Resources, R&D and the Law 1
Author: Bleuenn Guilloux
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1119528194
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 308
Book Description
Advances in research and development reveal the immense diversity and potential of marine genetic resources. Under international law, no specific regime applies to these complex and paradoxical objects of use. The Law of the Sea Convention sets a framework that is partly inadequate for this new category of resources. The Biodiversity Convention and the Nagoya Protocol only address the genetic resources of national areas. Patents allow their holder to exercise a monopoly on exploiting biotechnological creations to extensive claims, questioning the common nature of biodiversity and related knowledge. They hinder research and the objectives of biodiversity law. The legal and practical rules of physical and functional access vary in geometry. They focus on the valorization of research results, crystallizing conflicts of interest between suppliers and users. Sustainable research and development is essential to the knowledge and protection of marine biodiversity. The qualification of marine genetic resources in common, standard contractual tools, distributed research and development infrastructures, negotiation of an agreement on sustainable use and conservation of biodiversity beyond the limits of national jurisdiction, would To remove these inconsistencies.

Lacustrine Facies Analysis
Author: P. Anadon
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1444303929
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 330
Book Description
This book considers the deposition of sediments in different types of lakes and shows how changes in the lake environment can be interpreted from the sediment facies at the lake floor. Lakes are particularly sensitive to climate change and thus their sediments are accurate indicators of environmental change and palaeoclimate. This volume examines both ancient and modern lake deposits which is particularly appropriate considering the current widespread interest in global climate change, with particular emphasis on global warming. The book is global in approach and contains fifteen papers from an internationally acclaimed authorship. The volume will be of particular interest to sedimentologists, petroleum geologists, economic geologists and geographers with a particular interest in global climate change
