Added into the mix is the fact that the adoption for Eva has suddenly taken a turn for the worse. Her grandfather wants to be a part of her life and is questioning Marcus and Charlotte’s fitness as parents. With everything weighing on Marcus, he needs to make some hard choices about coming clean with his family’s secret and taking a stand against the unfairness that has cropped up in a criminal case that should’ve been open and shut. In finding a way to keep Eva in their family and close the adoption, Marcus may need to realize that carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders alone isn’t the answer—and that reaching out, asking for help, and trusting someone could be the only way to resolve everything.

The Yellow knife courthouse displays a collection of fourteen Inuit carvings representing landmark cases the legal history of the Northwest Territories. The cases, which came to trial before the NWT Supreme Court between 1955 and 1970, and the carvings that represent them illuminate a pivotal period of overwhelming social change when the Inuit camp system was eroding and age-old practices and traditional mores were being called into question. Dorothy Harley Eber tells the stories behind the carvings and provides fascinating insight into the unusual situations and special problems that developed as the Inuit came contact with Canada's justice system. The collection of carvings was started when J.H. Sissons, first resident justice of the NWT Supreme Court, received a carving of himself on the bench from an Inuit defendant. He decided to have Inuit artists document more cases and collected carvings that represented important decisions involving murder, assisted suicide, adoption, custom law marriage, and infractions of game laws. The collection was added to by his successor, William Morrow. Both Sissons and Morrow believed that to serve justice the North the law and the courts must adapt, and they were instrumental in spurring the fight for Native rights and making changes to the law to secure them. Eber provides colourful portraits of the two men based on recollections of those who travelled on circuit with them and observed their battles with Ottawa bureaucrats and the higher courts. Images of Justice resonates with voices of the North and comes alive through interviews with many of those involved in the cases -- Inuit and whites, defendants, judges, and prosecutors. Eber brings herstory up to date with a look at the courts today and presents views of Inuit and non-Inuit with regard to future directions. She also provides valuable information on the remarkable but little-known artists who created the unique works of art the Yellowknife Courthouse Collection of Inuit Sculpture. Prior studies of post-war American Gothic literature (and even American horror films) have primarily interpreted Gothic cultural production of the post-war period through a Cold War lens. Despite legitimate reasons for such an approach, this emphasis has limited inquiries into post-war fiction as well as our understanding of the nation’s complicated identity. While the federal government and its investigative agencies may have been preoccupied with the so-called ‘red menace’ that threatened to spread across the planet, each region of the country already possessed major strains of Gothic fiction that focused on regional anxieties – namely of those connected to women and minorities that threatened the region’s constructed identity and balance of power. In See Justice Done: The Problem of Law in the African American Literary Tradition, author Christopher Michael Brown argues that African American literature has profound and deliberate legal roots. Tracing this throughline from the eighteenth century to the present, Brown demonstrates that engaging with legal culture in its many forms—including its conventions, paradoxes, and contradictions—is paramount to understanding Black writing. Brown begins by examining petitions submitted by free and enslaved Blacks to colonial and early republic legislatures. A virtually unexplored archive, these petitions aimed to demonstrate the autonomy and competence of their authors. Brown also examines early slave autobiographies such as Olaudah Equiano’s Interesting Narrative and Mary Prince’s History, which were both written in the form of legal petitions. These works invoke scenes of Black competence and of Black madness, repeatedly and simultaneously. Early Black writings reflect how a Black Atlantic world, organized by slavery, refused to acknowledge Black competence. By including scenes of Black madness, these narratives critique the violence of the law and predict the failure of future legal counterparts, such as Plessy v. Ferguson, to remedy injustice. Later chapters examine the works of more contemporary writers, such as Sutton E. Griggs, George Schuyler, Toni Morrison, and Edward P. Jones, and explore varied topics from American exceptionalism to the legal trope of "colorblindness." In chronicling these interactions with jurisprudential logics, See Justice Done reveals the tensions between US law and Black experiences of both its possibilities and its perils.
