Book Description
Excerpt from Highways and Byways in Berkshire A few words by way of preface are written, not because they are imperative, but because it is a pleasure to indite them. I cannot, like Mr. A.G. Bradley, in the preface to his admirable volume in this series, plead, if I have omitted matter of interest, the excuse of over-abundant material; yet my title, like his, involves no particular obligation to include everything, and the title is relied upon for what it is worth. The first object of this preface, however, is to offer a general apology, not for the existence of the book, although that conventional attitude ought possibly to be adopted, but to those who have given willing and abundant help concerning the history of localities of special interest to them. Many of them have provided ample materials for a monograph of respectable length, and it has been my aim to extract from those materials such gossip, ancient and modern, as might serve to fill part of a volume able to be read with pleasure, and perhaps not entirely without profit. Book Description
Excerpt from Byways in Berkshire and the Cotswolds There is no more delightful region in England wherein to wander than the Berkshire Downs and the Cotswold Hills. I have known them intimately for forty years, and have found that Age cannot wither nor custom stale Their infinite variety. Like England itself it is "a land of just and old renown," full of lore and legend, of thick forests, now feeling the weight of the woodmen's axes, of bare wind-swept downs, of lovely villages and fair towns, of sturdy, kind-hearted peasants, slow of foot, but brave and fearless, as the record of this and of many other wars have shown. I have lived amongst them forty years and never had a wrong word with them. I have wandered where I listed through Windsor Forest, along the Thames highway, through the countries of Mary Russell Mitford and Charles Kingsley, and again on the Berkshire Downs and along the White Horse Vale. Through Faringdon I shall conduct the reader to the delightful region of the Cotswolds, and from Birdlip Hill view that delectable land as Moses did the plains of Palestine from Pisgah's height. I have not exhausted the subject, and another volume would have been needed wherein to describe all that might be seen in these wanderings; but perhaps I have written enough to interest the reader in one of the most delectable parts of England, portions of which are little known and of which, save of the Cotswolds in recent years, not much has been written.
