The work has been performed by developing a model potential which includes effects due to covalency, charge transfer due to outer most electrons of the cation and zero point energy interactions. The potential is used to derive expressions for second- and third-order elastic constants (SOECs and TOECs), thermo-physical properties and pressure derivatives of SOECs. The computed results are capable to explain successfully the SOECs, Cauchy's discrepancy in SOECs and their pressure derivatives, phase transition pressures, volume collapse, and thermal properties. The present results are close to experimental data and better than those computed earlier by others. Present model potential can be used for the similar properties of other compounds too.

Research on preparation of, characterization of, and physical-property measurements on rare-earth compounds of technological potential is described. Work was in four areas: magnetoferroelectric materials, narrow-band narrow-gap semiconductors, rare-earth pnictides, and cooperative excitation of luminescence of rare-earth ions in insulators. In the first area, study of heavy rare-earth manganites and chromites and their solid solutions has been emphasized. Ranges of solid solution and weak ferromagnetism have been determined for Yb compounds. High pressure orthorhombic phases of Y, Ho and Yb manganites were shown to be antiferromagnetic. Work is in progress to determine the extent of ferroelectricity in all of the systems prepared. In narrow-band narrow-gap materials, it was attempted to determine the nature of a localized excited state in SmB6 in order to understand the conductivity transition. However, work on very well characterized SmB6 has thus far been inconclusive. Work on the pnictides was primarily on production of near-stoichiometric oxygen-free samples of DyN for magnetic resonance studies. Finally, studies on two-photon infrared-excited red fluorescence of Ho(3+) ions in CaF2 have established that at ion concentrations greater than about 0.5% the fluorescence arises from cooperative energy transfer between Ho(3+) ions rather than from successive excitation of a single ion. During the past few years, the high pressure structural phase transition in Rare Earth Compounds has been studied extensively. These materials are mostly ionic in nature; crystallize in the rock salt structures at ambient pressure. In the rare earth compounds, the electrons hybridized between two states, which have nearly equal energy. These properties have been correlated with existence of unfilled f electron shell of RE ions, which therefore interact strongly with the lattice. In the present book a theoretical model has been used in order to understand the effect of f- electrons on phase transition, elastic, mechanical and lattice dynamical properties. The necessity of the development of present two body ineriionic potential model and various interactions required essentially for a complete account of the cohesion in RE compound have been described.We have also discussed Breathing Shell Model (BSM) theory to calculate complete phonon spectrum, density of states and specific heat of Neptunium Chalcogenides in this book.
