Book Description
"The nation's construction industry is fragmented, being composed of many small firms; it tends to be a low profit margin industry which is averse to risk taking. Also, in general it is a low technology industry. However, changes appear to be occurring as the industry becomes increasingly aware of the importance of knowledge and information dissemination. Limits on knowledge of materials affects: the capacity to construct; construction productivity; durability of constructed facilities; and, becoming increasingly important, environmental issues. According to the Civil Engineering Research Foundation (CERF), the construction industry materials information technology needs include: (1) a universal base of knowledge; (2) inexpensive, decentralized, and user-friendly access; (3) an expanded level of information development and organization; (4) reliable information on risk and innovation, information is needed on i) material performance and durability, and ii) materials cost; (5) standardized methods for predicting life-cycle cost ... The objectives of the workshop were to identify and priortize current and future needs of the construction industry for: (1) universal electronic access to distributed data, information, and knowledge on HPCMS; (2) new applications and/or new ways of using that data, information, and knowledge in (a) material design, processing, selection, and testing; and (b) facility design, construction or installation/application, operation, maintenance, repair, and disposal; (3) potential industry-university-government partnerships and pilot projects for testbed activities."--Executive summary.

Book Description
This book describes a number of high-performance construction materials, including concrete, steel, fiber-reinforced cement, fiber-reinforced plastics, polymeric materials, geosynthetics, masonry materials and coatings. It discusses the scientific bases for the manufacture and use of these high-performance materials. Testing and application examples are also included, in particular the application of relatively new high-performance construction materials to design practice. Most books dealing with construction materials typically address traditional materials only rather than high-performance materials and, as a consequence, do not satisfy the increasing demands of today's society. On the other hand, books dealing with materials science are not engineering-oriented, with limited coverage of the application to engineering practice. This book is thus unique in reflecting the great advances made on high-performance construction materials in recent years. This book is appropriate for use as a textbook for courses in engineering materials, structural materials and civil engineering materials at the senior undergraduate and graduate levels. It is also suitable for use by practice engineers, including construction, materials, mechanical and civil engineers.

Book Description
Presented at Engineering and Construction for Sustainable Development in the 21st Century, held in Washington, D.C., February 4-8, 1996. Sponsored by the Civil Engineering Research Foundation. This report presents 38 prospectuses developed by industry experts from more than 25 countries as part of an international collaborative agenda for the construction industry to advance innovation in support of sustainable development. The prospectuses, or proposed collaborative projects, identify challenges facing the engineering and construction industry and the problems associated with implementing innovative technologies. The prospectuses also recommend solutions to these challenges; detail the benefits of these solutions; identify proposed collaborative partners; and estimate the cost and schedule associated with implementing these projects.

Book Description
This report presents a detailed program to transform our nation's infrastructure. The Intended audience Is the Administration and Congress, other national policy makers, and government and industry leaders. Descriptions of major high-performance research and commercialization projects are provided by working groups representing ten different materials: aluminum, coatings, fiber-reinforced polymer composites, concrete, hot mix asphalt. masonry, roofing materials, smart material devices and monitoring systems, steel, and wood. The report builds on the 1991 National Civil Engineering Research Needs Forum organized by the Civil Engineering Research Foundation (CERF) and the 1993 initial program plan as presented in High-Performonce Construction Materials ond Systems: An Essentiol Program for America and its infrastructure. The high-performance CONstruction MATerials and systems program (CONMAT) will create significant improvements in the nation's infrastructure and U.S. competitiveness in the construction market. The report concludes by reviewing the strong support that the Administration has shown the CONMAT research effort to date and recommends continued support from government, industry, and academia to support this critical initiative.
