Book Description
Life in a rut? Job pays OK but only do it for the money? Hate the squalid people you have to be nice to in your working life? Sounds like publishing? Well, in fact it's the slightly more exotic world of strip joints, but the message is universal, for anyone who wishes they could stop what they hate doing and work at something they love. The heroine of this inspirational book is very lucky. She has a mentor who is cute, cool, wise and has only her best interests at heart. After she meets him, astride his Harley Davidson, her life begins to change. He cuts through the tough exterior she has learnt to project to the world and encourages her to like herself, believe in her potential and eventually to quit stripping for her real love, singing. Call him 'God', 'Higher Power', 'The Universal Life Force', whatever you will, Joan Brady shows us how to tap into our spiritual side and change our lives for the better.

Book Description
First published in 1977, The Sex Life of the Foot and Shoe examines the realities of foot and shoe eroticism practised by almost all of us, whether consciously or unconsciously. Provocative often witty and always original, the book takes us on a walking tour through history: from Chinese footbinding (completely sexual in intent) and the medieval poulaine (perhaps the most blatantly pornographic shoe ever worn) to the outrageous distortions of the foot gladly suffered by woman over the centuries in the cause of sexual allure. The author explores the obsession with ‘sick’ and ‘tired’ feet and the huge industry that has sprung up to cater to our negativism. He gives a psychosexual guide to us via footwear, grouping men’s and women’s shoes into such categories as sexy, sexless, neuter, bisexual, sensuous, peacock, masculine, eunuch and machismo. This book will be of interest to students of history, gender studies, sexuality studies and fashion.

Book Description
Shortlisted for the Association of Dress Historians Book of the Year Award, 2024 In the first book to examine the role played by textile manufacturing in the development of fashion in Italy, A New History of 'Made in Italy' investigates Italy's transition from a country of dressmakers, tailors and small-scale couturiers in the early post-Second World War period to a major producer of ready-to-wear fashion in the 1980s. It takes the reader from Italy's first internationally attended fashion show in 1951 to Time magazine's Giorgio Armani April 1982 cover story, which signalled the fashion designer's international arrival, and Milan's presence as the capital of ready-to-wear. Chapters focus for the first time on the material substance of Italian fashion – textile – looking at questions including the importance of manufacturing quality, design innovation, composition, production techniques, commerce and the role of textile on the country's overall fashion system. Through these, Lucia Savi brings to light the importance of synthetic fibres, previously little-known players, such as the carnettisti (a type of textile wholesalers) as well as re-investigating well-known couturiers and designers such as Simonetta, Gianfranco Ferré and Gianni Versace. By looking at how things are made, by whom, and where, this book seeks to unpack the 'Made in Italy' label through a focus on making. Informed by extensive archival materials retrieved from a wide range of sources, it brings together the often-separated disciplines of fashion, textile and design history.
