Heroes and Heroines of Memphis
Author: D. A. Quinn

Book Description
Excerpt from Heroes and Heroines of Memphis: Or Reminiscences of the Yellow Fever Epidemics That Afflicted the City of Memphis During the Autumn Months of 1873, 1878 and 1879, to Which Is Added a Graphic Description of Missionary Life in Eastern Arkansas Seeing that the History of Yellow Fever, written soon after the panic of 1878, was so "sparing" of catholic facts that it scarcely referred to Catholicism, I expected then, and during the past seven years never resigned the hope, that some clergyman of the diocese of Nashville, or worthy catholic citizen of Memphis, more competent than myself, would write an impartial History of the Lives of those Martyr-Heroes and Heroines, who, in imitation of their divine Master, "laid down their lives for the people." As up to the present year no one appears to have undertaken this task, I considered it an act of justice to the memory of the "departed," as also a laudable exemplar of unflinching faith, to record my "Yellow-Fever Reminiscences." In those instances where I have assumed a hilarious, when a serious tone would be more in keeping with the gravity of the subject, I simply meant to compensate for the many tearful events I had previously recorded, or had yet to record. If my narration of facts and "tributes" to the "departed" are not couched in grandiloquent words, or choice diction, I have only to regret that some one more capable than myself has not appropriated the subject. However, as all men have to acknowledge some little repertory of self-complacency, or self-conceit, I, too, have mine. Apart from the pleasure it affords me to extol the virtues of my "departed" comrades, I feel assured that, as there are thousands yet living in Tennessee who can attest the facts I indite, my little book will be read, if not with admiration, at least with interest and pleasure. Heroes and Heroines of Memphis
Author: Denis a Quinn
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 198
Book Description
The author, Father Dennis A. Quinn, was a Catholic Priest who was an eyewitness to the yellow fever epidemics of Memphis in the 1870s. While admittedly drawing on the exhaustive work of John M. Keating's chronicle of the epidemic, Father Quinn felt another work would be justified centering on the work of the religious orders who laboured among the sick. Like a good shepherd, fear of death could not deter them from the duties of their missions of love and self-sacrifice to the citizens of Memphis whom they served without discernment of racial, social, or economic standing. While Mr. Keating's history certainly evokes much pathos, it is a more lengthy and historical work, while Father Quinn's book is more subjective.

Race, Power, and Political Emergence in Memphis
Author: Sharon D. Wright
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000526755
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 140
Book Description
Race, Power, and Political Emergence in Memphis examines black political behavior and empowerment strategies in the city of Memphis. Each chapter of the text focuses on three themes-mobilization, emergence, and incorporation. By analyzing the effects of race on black political development in Memphis, scholars will be able to examine broader questions about its effects in other cities. How do political machines use substantial black electorates to their advantage? What forms of protest do black communities conduct to rebel against machine rule? What primary mobilization tactics have black citizens used during the different periods of their political development? Why do blacks mobilize more quickly in some cities? In cities with large and predominantly black populations, what elements prevent black candidates from winning citywide races? What constraints do newly elected black mayors face? What benefits do black citizens gain from their representation? After a predominantly black governing coalition is elected, what obstacles remain? Can black citizens translate proportional representation into strong political incorporation? How much power can African Americans realistic expect to gain in cities? This book is the most comprehensive case study of the city's political scene written to date. The text primarily shows that white racism is not the only obstacle to black political development. Black citizens can have population majorities, but lose elections for other reasons. Their ability to win elections and gain full incorporation depends heavily on whether they minimize internal conflict and establish coalitions with middle-class citizens and the business establishment.
