Reports that Captain Thomas Vose, who was overseeing affairs on Knox's Maine lands, was in town the previous week. Vose fears that a ship sailing from the St. George River was lost at sea. Adds that Knox's coachman, William, was on board. Notes that the people who live on Knox's land are late in their payments because of Brown's petition, and they will not make any payments as long as the petition's status is uncertain in the [General] Court. Encloses a letter from William Frost (not included). Frost is trying to collect money from Knox, and Jackson plans to wait for Knox's approval before paying him. Briefly describes George Washington's recent visit to Boston: The Presidents visit will make a lasting impression on the minds of the people in this quarter, and I can discover an alteration in the sentiments of a number who were fluctuating & uneasy previous to this event. The President must have arrived with you long before this and I am satisfied you will hear every particular that took place on his introduction to this City. Also writes, Many here are of opinion that an Indian War is inevitable. Some have gone so far as to begin to count on their share of the plunder of South America. Sends his regards to Lucy Knox and Catharine Greene.

Writes that Isaac Winslow has gone to Halifax, but they spoke about it and it is Winslow's opinion that it would take a large farm and many laborers to make the lime business profitable, but it might not be in the Winslow family's power to accomplish that. Further, the government would not allow monopoly of this article to any one family. Lime is not selling well and the Winslows have a great store of it. Discusses other business, including sale of Knox's hardware, which is in Jackson's possession; John Brooks' receipt of permission to leave confinement to settle his debts; New York's daring new financial policy; and the start of new representation in the coming weeks, which may cause difficulty to their friend [Benjamin] Hichborn, among others. Writes to his wife saying that he did indeed write to her before, but that he later found out his letter was not delivered: As I staid at Randalls I entrusted it to his black man, and it is now pretty evident he deceived me and did not carry it to the office. Also comments on recent attacks upon him in a newspaper: I have read the attack in Adams's paper - The writer must be a fellow of diabolical sensation to be sure - It shall not give me pain. I shall put all those sons of darkness and envy under my feet one of these days but, the time has not arrived. The report of the Committee of Congress is my mark - If it is received I sing - if it is rejected I soar. Further discusses his finances and accounts, and asks her not to mention any of this information to Henry Jackson. Of his planned meeting with Joseph Brandt, the famous Mohawk chief, he writes, I think our overtures for peace will be successful - One thing may prevent them - The inroads of the frontier people against positive orders - and the killing our messengers. Asks Lucy to befriend Captain Anthony's wife, since Knox has experienced some solid friendships through Anthony. Ends by stating that he had two family dinners with the President this week.
